Description Drawn as a gift for Imera for the 2012/3 round of the SSHG Exchange over at LiveJournal. The prompt was: 'Romantic historical book cover, with the pirate/warrior/soldier/etc Severus and the damsel (or sort of) in distress Hermione,' but I couldn't help tweaking it a bit by swapping the traditional gender roles.

Oh wow - I can't express how much I love this! Audrey Beardsley's striking Art Nouveau style, a perfectly romantic story, served with a healthy dose of irony (Lord Lucius! Queen Hermione!) all make for a delightful piece of art.

Just a few questions, some points of the story are not quite clear: who captured the Prince? What's the deal with the dragon in panel 3? And what happens on the tower?
And a tiny little complaint: there is no kiss in "The Prince's Kiss"! There really should be one!

But all in all, this is just gorgeous! And I especially love Hermione's pregnancy (perfect romantic ending) and the Prince's sort-of-smile in the last panel.

Well - wow!- right back at you. Thank you for such effusive praise. And I'm so pleased you got the ironic slant to the whole thing. I had enormous fun with the storyboarding for this.

And now for the questions you've posed:

1. Here's what I said in my reply to Janach below: 'Well, that's rather up to the viewer's imagination, I'd say. Since the second panel is in Hermione's thought bubble, it's either the exact truth as Lucius is telling it, or an embellishment of his to get her to take on the task, or else Hermione's imagination running away with her. Your pick! In my head, it's the third option with her imagining Severus in the evil Amazon Queen Bellatrix's clutches. It's all a bit tongue-in-cheek really. I was just having a bit of fun with this prompt.

2. A wonderful LJ reviewer by the name of Delphismith articulated this far better than I could: 'The dragon in "Queen Hermione's Quest" -- Exeunt stage right, so we see only its wing and tail -- is a clever device; I take it as symbolizing all the adventures she has had en route to her goal of the tower where her true love awaits.' This is exactly what I had intended!

3. I have absolutely no idea! Something similar to what happens in Shrek? Your guess is as good as mine.

4. I agree. There really should. I suggest you take it up with Severus, who was most unaccomodating, the selfish prude!

Thanks again. I guess the Prince does all his best work behind closed doors, like the unsung hero he is.

Oh yes, I believe you had fun doing this - it shows!

Thanks for answering my questions.

1. Ha, I totally missed the thought bubbles, so I took the panel at face value. But I really like the idea of EvilAmazonQueen!Bellatrix! (And I just read your exchange with Janach, I didn't know about the star, but it fits perfectly.)

2. That makes sense.

3. I have no idea what happens in Shrek (see my reply about Spock!Snape ), but as far as I'm concerned, "I'll leave it to your imagination" is always a good answer!

4. Ah well, if Severus isn't cooperating there's nothing to be done... (A bit hypocritical of him, really, given the amount of pwp fanfiction on the net ).
But now you mention it, actually they're both looking like: "Nah. Not in public." But they do look rather smug in the last panel.

Thank you for such a wonderful piece of art!
