Description
This is actually for a Color Theory assignment. The prompt was "hidden in plain sight". The idea is to camouflage an object or person in a scene using color and light.I went for sci-fi, because of course! Cloaking technology is awesome. I was originally going to do a cloaked soldier, but that didn't really work out the way I had hoped.

Awesome! reminds me of the ships in the animorph series, it was one of the first books and the description of the cloaking sheild on he ships in my mind were kind of like this.

This is just such a ridiculously cool concept! Realistic too, if you were basing your work on existing infrared-cloaking hex plates. Makes me want to take color theory

You know clearly they haven't figure out perfect cloaking tech. Because in an ideal world the landing gear would be cloak.

your work has always been good. but of late been seeing a lot of stuff that would make some Pros jealous and I think this one is in the running

Nothing gets rid of the crows like an unexplained floating gun turret.

I know I already commented on this, but, I love the distortion because of the nature of the cloaking technology. Your sci fi designs are always my favourite o:

I'm honestly surprised it worked as well as it did haha. I was afraid the hexagons would be a little too big.

Haha, at first glance I didn't even see it...
+1 for cloaking technology. XD
that is really, really, really awesome made sir! did you make the plane first sort of 3D, then .. the texture over it? Or drew it completely?

That's the idea!
The ship is on 3 layers. I have a base layer that is the entire shape of the ship. I just blocked this in with a solid brush. The layer over that is the same one with the non-cloaked parts cut out. The layer over that is the hexagon pattern in the shape of the ship. I used the warp tool to make it fit the form I had imaged for the ship. Then I just locked the transparency on my ship layers and painted them in.

This is amazing. When I first saw it in my messages I couldn't see the drop ship AT ALL. It really shows that when up close you are able to see it, it would be invisible from afar.

I love this so much. It's just so slick and believable, without sacrificing the actual functionality of the cloak.

Thanks! I tried to go for something a little more believable. This one is based on actual prototype camouflage, too, though the real-world one is thermal rather than visual.

Or maybe the soldier is just SO cloaked that they aren't visible?

Pythosart In reply to Fallingfreely [2013-02-19 22:27:27 +0000 UTC]
Haha, maybe! Though you'd think they could cloak their ship better if they can cloak a soldier.
