Description This is mostly coloring practice, made after watching a couple of speedpaint videos by *Mr--Jack . Mainly this one [link]

Good stuff.

So yeah. Enjoy my rhino-xenomorph-motorcycle beast. I'm quite proud of it, despite its shortcomings.

This took me a couple of hours to finish, so it's certainly not a speedpainting. I suppose the speed part will come with time and practice.

Don't worry, I'm doing my commissions like a good Pythos.

It does. Seriously. And for some reason, figure drawing gives a massive speed boost as well.

Motorcycle beasts are the best kinds of beasts. Awesome stuff, can't wait to be able to paint like this someday.

Sorry, can't resist! "There's a good dog" (patting the mech steed on the head). Anyway, keep up the good work. I'm sure you'll get another one like this done in a matter of half an hour next time.

He probably has a massive turn radius and often gets wedged in narrow streets. Because that makes sense.

Thanks!

The legs that you made a lighter look kind of awkward, because I can tell you just used a layer on top of it. If you could figure out some other way to do that, I think this would look a lot nicer. It's still amazing though! The way you did it really brings out the main point for viewing.

Pythosart In reply to Brainmatters [2012-05-09 00:30:08 +0000 UTC]

Huh. What's awkward about them/how can you tell there's a layer on top? I'd like to fix it if I can. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I had forgotten the name of the tool, what I actually meant was that it looks like you used the gradient tool, and it would better better if you hadn't because it doesn't blend the colours smoothly.

Looking at the painting again, what I think this painting really needs is some sfumato. I know it's just a solid colour background, but it would look a lot better with softer edges, so that it blends easier with the background. That's probably why I think the gradient on the legs looks awkward too, because (aside from the very back one) they have hard edges.

Of course, I'm no professional, so that's just my opinion, more or less. Like I said, it still looks awesome, and I still love how it brings out the most important parts. I want that robot as a pet.

This is really badass. I absolutely love the colors you've used here, and the way the other limbs seem to fade into the background is pretty nifty. Great concept!

what brush did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to GeekOwl [2012-05-09 00:53:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Not sure. It was one of CS5's default brushes.. It was oval shaped and had "wet edges" and 0% edge hardness as its default settings. I messed with it a little, but it didn't make a huge difference apart from sharpening the edges.

I found that speed boosted with doing lifedrawing. I don't know whether that's helpful to you. It looks ready to buldose a brick wall. I like the shading you've done to signify angles in the armour, particularly that forearm o: Nicely done.
