A drawing for my art class based off a world I'm creating as my final project for this year The title for this world is City of Fireflies. I won't go into uneccessary wanky detail about why it's called that, suffice to say there are lots of glowing lights and stuff

This image is the depiction of a virtual world, not the visible world without a HUD. The other picture is. Plot twist :U

Based in the 28th century at some point in time, the earth has undergone drastic changes, with huge amounts of CO2 having been released into the atmosphere, and the sea level rising. Paired with the supervolcano eruption in the (23rd?) century, the atmosphere changed drastically. After the eruption, humanity fell behind technologically for at least half a century. Industries that were building up a future of clean energy fell apart, and humanity once more began polluting to keep civilisation alive.

Fast forward to the future, and the citizens of this city are forced to deal with the actions of the past. Wearing respirators outside in order to stay healthy, many people instead choose to live lives' inside, connecting with the outside world via the internet. This huge shift in the workforce encouraged the development of robots and machines that were directly controllable by humans. In the huge rush to develop human interface-friendly machines (HIF, pronounced "hvv" by mixing the phonetic actions for "hhh" "fff" and "vvv"), many attempts to create artificial intelligence were sidetracked. This led to the creation of the "99 percent"- robots and programs that, for all intents and purposes, appeared to have intelligence. They were, however, not self-aware. They were just the illusion of sentiency. (similar to chatbots today)

While many jobs in the workforce had been filled by HIFs, the law stated that a human is allowed to take a job that they can perform to an adequate standard as long as it is doable. This led to a widespread return by some to jobs that had not been performed by many humans for over three hundred years- mainly passive jobs, like holding warning batons (keep your eyes peeled, that might be in the next drawing ), directly operating machinery etc. Unfortunately, this led to a rise in extremism in some groups against the concept of total machine control. Anarchist groups like Boom Boom (A picture of which I drew a little while ago) draw on the passiveness of many people towards life- an issue largely caused by the separation one experiences by living excusively in the virtual world- to wreak havoc for no particular cause. Kinda like trolls today, just IRL.

A slight note on the side, people who still engage in outside activities (roughly 91 percent of the population) are largely connected to the internet via their HUDs (Heads-up display). Many of these have become integrated with their respirators, and a new design wave hit in around 2640, where full face covers were built, simultaneously connecting the user with the internet while filtering the air they breathe. Of course, full face or head covers aren't for everyone. The more successful and wealthy tend to have inbuilt respirators placed in their windpipes, and to have pliable contact lenses placed over their irises. This means they can walk around outside, without any visible apparel covering their face. This in turn leads to a rise in facial and body reconstruction, which becomes a hugely popular practice.

Of course, being constantly connected to the net doesn't just mean you've always got facebook open. It leads to the rise of "pseudo-avatars" - digital versions of the person they represent. Only visible through a HUD, they allow people to express themselves in a way that until then had been very difficult. Pseudo-avatars almost single-handedly destroy what remained of racism and sexism in civilisation at this time.

At the same time however, advances in information transmission speeds allow for huge amounts of data to be instantly recieved. Many create multiple PsAtars (Pseudo-avatars) that are only visible through certain filters, accessible through the HUD. This creates many underground groups. Group members could recognise one of their own in a crowd of people because of their PsAtars, as well as enabling mulitple versions of the one reality WHICH IS WHAT THIS IS GUYZ PLS NOTE THIS IS JUST ONE PARTICULAR VERSION OF REALITY (Japanese + Retro + Atmospheric filters)
