edit: Forgot to add, the last two adjustments to the pictures are done in photoshop.

Sorry, I wanted to re-edit the format of the walkthrough to better suit dA and add a step I missed, but had to leave for some stuff the other day, so I decided to just take the old one down >.<;;. sorry~!

made this walkthrough for peeps who couldn't seem to find my brush settings on tumblr, but I included how I use these brushes in a walkthrough of a speed-painting I did of Mercury, so I hope this helps . Initially this was for tumblr folks but I'm gonna throw it on here too :3.

Thank you very much for sharing how you do your work!  I've been trying to get my artwork to look less cartoony (to no avail.)   I always end up circling back to the same style.  So I'm hoping this will help me out of my rut!  Here's hoping!

I've never seen little tidbits of info like yours. It is extremely helpful. Usually I see your basic digital painting tutorials, but you give extremely important tips that are essential in creating a good painting, e.g. adding shadows, lasso feathering, curve tool, and also showing exactly what kind of brush you use and the size, density, opacity, etc. Thank you so much!

Thanks for posting this.  I've been afraid that my SAI brush settings have been getting a bit stale, so having some new perspective will certainly freshen things up for me.

Wow! Thanks a ton! I'm going to try a bunch of new techniques.
I just have a question: What exactly does the curve tool do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Qinni In reply to Equestrian-Equine [2014-03-23 06:52:08 +0000 UTC]

It essentially adjusts the bright and darkness of the picture but there's more to it than that since it also kind of adjusts the saturation as well... and it's really much easier for you to play around with it than for me to try to explain

PepperyLime In reply to Equestrian-Equine [2014-03-23 02:21:02 +0000 UTC]

it curves around the inside so the outside of the curve has a effect 'blurred'
if you can see on the last image

Nice! One thing I'm unclear on is...what does the curve tool do exactly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 4

Qinni In reply to Aetherling [2014-03-22 18:08:59 +0000 UTC]

curve tool essentially adjusts the colours. bring it below the diagonal line and the picture becomes darker; bring it above, the picture's lighter. Just play around with it and you'll see
