Reblog from my Tumblr ?Please read my commentary before asking any more questions~! thanks
Finished Work:
Edit: I've had a few repeated question of how I work my lineart into the drawing.
I'd like to clarify that i don't really actually have a clean line-art. I have clean-sketches that I work under, but they're not what I personally call lineart. If you zoom in, they are very messy. I do merge the layers together at some point in step 5, and I continue to literally work the colours of the lineart into the skin (which is why i turned the sketch layer into overlay so the colours become very similar and nice to work with). That way I can get an almost none-lineart quality.
also, if you're wondering about canvas sizes, check out my journal about them: [link]
The program I used was Painttool SAI, but I think you can achieve similar effects via photoshop with a low-opacity textured brushes.
I hope this helped : ) Sorry it's so darn long. I kept it as short as I could but it's still a pretty long process.
Please keep in mind this is more of a guide to my painting process and how I technically go about doing this; It's not going to automatically teach you how to render or understand structure or anatomy (which I hope I will cover in more tutorials in the future.), which is very important, of course, to the painting itself. That's why I'll be slowly going through and doing more tutorials on anatomy and structure in the next few months, hopefully
A good practice for rendering is actually to do still life and human sketches. preferably with a pencil, and not digitally (yet)
Step-by-step animation:
In the mean time, have some of my other anatomy tutorials:

thanks for the tutorial. It looks to me that "eye contact" between cat and mermaid was stronger in the post-scriptum sketch than in the piece itself, though.

It doesn't make you less of an amazing artist. And it wasn't the purpose of tutorial either, but I thought you might like to be noticed it's there.

This is quite helpful c: but as with all other tutorials there is a huuuuge gap between 2 and 3 D: from flat colours to finished picture almost which always have stopped me from understanding...I myself use PS and try to master the default round brush xD can I make something like this with that tool?
π: 0 β©: 1
Qinni In reply to Penzone [2013-04-09 17:18:29 +0000 UTC]
It may be a big gap simply because this part has more to do with understanding the basics of art rather than what a walk-through can show you. if you understand structure and lighting well, you would understand how I came to making decisions for where to shad and where to highlight. It's really got everything to do with understanding the structure of the thing you're drawing rather than anything else.
I'm not sure if you can achieve the same effect with PS, to be honest, because I use the water brush a lot, which is a brush that blends two colours on the same layer in a traditional medium kind of way.

I can only speak for myself, but one of the reasons I check tutorials and videos is to get the understanding of both basics of art and the general techniques used by persons, but as a red thread through my search is the lack of steps between that perticular stage, and I often wonder things like "how did that get there? how did he/she create this?" which is not often shown, like how to make lineless art which was my latest project. First usually there's a sketch, next both flat colour and shading are there with details and I get lost once again.

This tutorial is so beautifull and helps sort out so many things.
And I love seeing those steps together. While the finished version is amazing, the half-sketchy-half-finished image is so beautifull as well, and has it's own qualities too !

Oh wow, thank you so much for taking the time to make this, it's really helpful and beautiful at the same time. I mean, your whole process is breathtaking.
A quick question in case you have the time to reply: ok, you have your color layer, and then a multiply layer with your lines on top of it and another lines layer on overlay on top of the multiply one? Is that how it works? And then you merge the three of them together. Or did I get it wrong?
π: 0 β©: 1
Qinni In reply to Liralicia [2013-04-03 17:53:01 +0000 UTC]
I use multiply on my sketch layer which is on top of my coloured layer; Sometimes I only use overlay, but never just multiply (because then it doesn't make much of a difference). You can keep adjusting stuff like the opacity or layer-type (in photoshop, if you need to) until you think it looks good. it all depends on the artwork you're doing, to be honest, and what the colour-themes are. If it's darker in general, then usually just an overlay's enough, but if it's really light, then it's good to have another layer with it on multiply (but at a lower opacity) so it stands out more. Not sure if I'm making sense here? xD;;
but yes, after you've ajdusted everything, merge it so you can start working the line into the skin with the water tool or brush tool.

itΒ΄s so great youΒ΄re willing to share what youΒ΄ve worked out over years of development and practice!
many artists feel their method should somewhat remain a secret and they will give tips but never entirely axplain their whole progress. so with this, and knowing how much effort and time it can take to find your very own method, iΒ΄ve come to really appreciate if someone with your level of skill decides to open up and explain.

with all the great painters here sharing their knowledge, itΒ΄s like being an apprentice all over the world.

WOAH
this was amazing, and really helpful
did/do you go to a(n) [professional] art school, or are you self-taught?
also
is painttool SAI free? because i work with sketchbook express and there isn't all those cool effects and features that you mentioned in your tutorial (i.e., i don't know what overlay/multiply is, don't have textured brush... yeah. i'm really stupid. or ignorant. or both. please explain!-- in reply or send me a note. >.<)

This was really interesting to read, especially how you make the colours blend by carefully brushing a bit different places, and how you blend the skecth in C: Thank you for taking time to put this together!

Do you ever do any videos or live streams? I followed this pretty well, but its a lot easier to see what you're doing when I can watch it x3 I have been trying to figure out how to do that lineartless stuff for forever, but I don't really get how you did it. D:

I do have livestream, but I can't do any right now for a few reasons - i'm in china, and the china-us connection is really slow, also my computer is really really slow and it doesn't like livestream xD;;
I might do some livestreams later half of this year when I go back to Canada and get a new laptop .

I feel a sudden need to hug you forever.
This is literally the first tutorial that tells me what to do with that darn sketch layer.
I'll have to try that ASAP.
I also love how you explain not only what you're doing, but also why you are doing it, which is great, because that's another thing most tutorials don't do.

This is...so amazing. I could stare at it all day.
Just a question: Starting out in SAI, do you use any textures with your brushes or general background??
My pictures turn out so shiny and digital, while yours maintain a real painted look...maybe it's my imagination O.o haha. But is there something you do with textures/brushes?
