Know as the biggest Garratt in the US, the SS20A Articulated Steam Locomotive was built in Cheyanne, Wyoming in 1980. The locomotive is called a 'Garratt' by how the driving axles are placed (in this case; front & back whist incasing the boiler and cab between them), the total amount of SS20As built was around 9-14 locomotives. The SS20As were capable of pulling a 11-15ft Manifest consist up some serious grades, much like the Big Boys but with alot more tractive effort, the SS20As were also brilliant bankers as well, assisting EMD Dash-9s, SDs and the new Genvo diesels. The SS20As would be equipped with Nathan K5LA horns in 2000 and a EMD Diesel engine in the now empty front water tank (that were fitted in 2007) along with being oil-fired. SS20a No.5100a (was 20000) was preserved somewhere in the US.
