Welcome to the Venus of Bob Mumby's "Stars, Sickles, and Swastikas" atompunk universe, bobmumby.deviantart.com/galler… where the solar system is divided between US+Allies Venus, Red (in both senses) Mars, and the Nazis in the asteroids! Earth, meanwhile, is nowadays a somewhat radioactive fixer-upper.

On Venus, the majority live in the domes and carry out the industrial production and mining activities that make life possible on this hellishly hot, dry and perpetually stormy planet, (Not quite as bad as in our universe, but still a hellhole), while the sky cities of the local "1 %" soar above. Beyond, many smaller cities have been founded by people seeking to escape the confined and regimented life in the domes, surviving by mining, hydroponic farming, and extraction of energy and useful chemicals and biologicals (there are some weird extremophile life forms) from volcanic vents. Others are essentially satellites of the dome cities, set up to specifically mine some rich new mineral vein, or capture the energy of a vent. In orbit are the fortress cities of the military caste, in training for the endless cold war with the space-Nazis and Commies when not dropping down to the surface to knock heads together.

It's an oligarchic, not very democratic world, dominated by a military-industrial complex allied with autocratic presidents, with a mostly rubber-stamp congress. Although the frontier is freer, many of its cities are essentially company towns run by the giant corporate combines, and any "independent" town that steps too far out of line or attracts the wrath of the corporation faces the overwhelming power of the military. Some of the frontier settlements have joined together into larger units, for economics of scale or to gain a better bargaining position - actual armed resistance is fairly unthinkable at this point. Here and there are the largely invisible ruins of failed settlements or company outposts abandoned for lack of profitability, and the more visible ruins of an armored truck or walking machine owned by a now deceased prospector who didn't take maintenance seriously enough on this lethal planet.

It's also a racist sort of world - US attitudes have not progressed much beyond the 1950s of our world, and while whites have various avenues for climbing out of the domes and reaching the sky cities, for blacks no amount of money or skill will get them in. It's a similar story for minorities elsewhere - non-Thai in the Thai domes, Indians in many Latin American domes, the non-Japanese immigrants that do the shittiest jobs in the Japanese domes, Muslims in the Filipino domes, etc. Things are a bit better for blacks in the Brazilian domes - enough money will whiten ones skin, somewhat...
