Quaylak — Need Backup

Description Two of Highwood Tribe's newest scouts out on patrol one cloudy afternoon. Seems they've found themselves an adolescent male Gorbear wandering in their Tribe's territory. Normally, they would have followed it closely and let it pass through undisturbed, but it was getting a little too close to the heart of their home. At the very sight of the approaching Murai, the easily-agitated Gorbear charged. Now, the question is, who should run for backup, and who should stay behind with the enemy? Neither of the young scouts have enough experience fighting off such big opponents, so they're not going about it in the best way. Guess they'll just have to pray that another patrol will hear them and come to their aid.

This started off as a quick concept doodle that I wanted to draw of the Murai's greatest enemy; the Gorbear. So then, for fun, I thought I'd add in a couple of Murai for a size comparison. But why not draw them fighting (and wearing their masks, yay) or something? After it was sketched, I thought I'd ink it. After inking, I flat colored. After that, I shaded. And then a background came in. Before I knew it, I had taken this image waaaay too far. Further than I thought I would (or probably should have). I tried real hard to get the cast shadows from the trees above on the characters, but man, that's easier said than done. I know what it should look like, but actually trying to replicate it is another story. Most of this was rushed and done very, very quickly. So it's sorta sloppy.

As mentioned, Gorbears are the Murai's worst natural enemy. They are big, angry, and violent. Female Gorbears are even more aggressive than males, especially if they are with cubs. Both genders have those large horns, which --you guessed it-- they use to gore their enemies. Their horns get much, much larger than the Gorbear in my illustration. Though similar to grizzly bears, these guys are often larger, with huge feet and slightly longer legs (and horns, obviously). Still working on their design a bit. Next up will be something featuring the Machstag.

...I'm going to be quiet now. X3

I miss them too. ._. But I am working on them little by little, especially now that I'm out of work. They'll always be around, and I have some illustrations in the works that will hopefully bring them back a bit, at least to my gallery. X3

;o; Yay. Do you still use only AIM?

Yes'm, only AIM when I find the time (which is still hard to come by, it seems). I've been considering setting up a different SN, since my "quaylak" name is one that gets swamped with IMs from strangers and things. x_x; Gets hard to manage and isn't much of an incentive to sign on, I reckon. I'll try and pop on some time soon. I miss chatting with you. D'8

;o; You should keep the Quaylak as your "business" one, and make a personal one for friends, so you don't get swamped when you just wanna chat.

Looks like one nasty sucker, I wouldn't like to disturb a brooding female, thats for sure! Excellent piece to show the size/strength comparison, lovely linework too ^_^

Oh yeah, the females are the most deadly. I really need to draw one, as well as an older, longer-horned male.

Thanks a bunch, I'm glad this helps folks see the size difference a bit.

I really wish I had more to say but this is epic. The concept is wonderful and I think you pulled off the shadows from the trees quite nicely. Instafave!
