If people like furries ask me what kind of furry I am, I'll reply "a shark therian". I don't really think I have the spirit or soul of a shark, however. I wish I had, that would be really cool, but I think what I perceive and depict as my shark-ness, my beast traits, are just certain ways that I am different to the normal human mental template.It's also rooted very deeply in my Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism, which affects my ability to socialise with humans and to interpret the various kinds of human communication, as well as giving me various kinds of sensory weirdnesses.
I still haven't figured out what the root of the "shifting" is. What is known in the therian community as "mapping"; when you feel and even get sensory feedback from limbs/tails/ears/feathers etc. that aren't actually there. I get this mostly from my teeth and throat area (gills), tail, claws, and what I call my neck spines (probably an extension of the mammalian tendency to bristle the neck fur).
In dreams I'm often shapes that appear human but also aren't, and I very often have the option of a 3rd dimension (instead of being stuck to the ground like an etch-a-sketch point) and can fly, leap on buildings, or swim. This is something that bothers me intensely in real life. I'm walking and the urge to lift my feet off the ground and propell myself forwards without touching the ground is really strong, and frustrating.
I welcome any questions, though I did this mainly for-the-lulz.

Not at all! ^__^ Well, I think all the things I wrote in this meme are still accurate, but my categorisation/interpretation of them has changed. Add to that, a couple of years ago I was hit HARD with a sudden dragonkin thing (literally, I was bending down to take a drink from the bathroom tap and then wham: u are a dragon, sucker).
Basically, to summarise, the way I currently interpret things with myself is as three distinct identities, or personas. The shark stuff has all gone into a persona called Sea Dog (who is generally kind of an asshole tbh). I feel like I was struggling for many years to harmonise the shark stuff and the rest of me into a single thing, it felt wrong and jarring and I couldn't figure out why, and honestly since the split I (we??) couldn't be happier, lmao

Wow, so you're a dragonkin also! Sometimes I too, feel like I belong to more than one species. I hope one day I can figure out if I'm an otherkin or not.
By the way, I agreed so strongly on your note answering why there's so many "wolf therians". It is exactly what I think and want to tell people, but can't write in words. So, thank you.
It is really annoying how everyone who feels a herb psychology automatically thinks they're a wolf... I hope real wolves eat them

Well I certainly wouldn't go that far, I think wolves are just very relatable animals for humans, it makes a lot of sense for people to feel connected to them (we liked them so much and we understood them so well we domesticated them to be our friends, after all).
I hope you can figure things out in a way that's fulfilling for you! In all this therian/otherkin/etc etc strangeness it can be difficult to understand yourself, especially when there's conflicting impulses and feelings happening. I know I feel settled with two of my personas, but there is still so much uncertainty even after all the years I've spent figuring myself out, and of course as time passes everybody changes anyway as the world around them provides new experiences and knowledge! I wish you all the best with it. ^__^

I was actually doing the raptor-feet thing today, walking around with raised tarsi, mapping those tic-tic claws. I used to have dreams where I was a human who had been raised by JP raptors.

I think it's very interesting the way our experiences of, as ~LeccathuFurvicael put it, the therian "condition" are so different. For you it's an infinitely spiritual, mental, almost totem-like thing, and you've yet to connect with it physically in any large way (so I understood). For me it originated with physical sensation and experience, and I still feel that I'm trying to find the best way to interpret it. My shark species isn't specific (though I have those I feel more kinship with), and there are times where I even doubt the shark-ness, and wonder if what I feel isn't something more like a seal or a pike or a chimaera.
*TarawynWorldwalker also has a totem-like connection to a specific animal (Philippine eagle) but is also a shifter, so you might find it interesting to read her therian meme as well. C:

Im not sure what triggers any specific "awareness" such as dreams or the physical differences.
My brother told me to try and Meditate every so often and try and focus on my therian-animal. And for a while nothing happened, until I suddenly came to his name. After that, the connection got stronger.
And, There was ONE instance that I forgot to mention on my meme.
I often like to light a match and just watch it, as well as I enjoy the sulpheric smell.
I also can watch a fire and smoke for hours. ^.=.^

That aside, this is pretty interesting. I like to be in touch with my "animal instincts" sometimes too, but I've never thought of myself as having characteristics of a different animal... I always thought about it as my "wild human" side (after all, we are animals, no matter how hard we try to deny it). I've never experienced anything like mapping, but I'll do something like walk into a room, catch a whiff of something (99% of the time it's food) and pinpoint exactly what the smell is. For me, it's just moments here and there where I briefly feel in touch with my inner animal. (Perhaps why I enjoy Jekyll/Hyde stories so much - the super-ego versus the id?)
Aaaand, admittedly, I have to physically resist the urge to howl when I see a full moon. I mean, have you looked at a full moon? IT'S BEGGING TO BE HOWLED AT.

I think AS people do have a high percentage among therians/otherkin/dragonkin etc., mostly because it's an expression of feeling different to other people who are more neurotypical for humankind. There are also the hypersensitivity issues, people with AS tend to pay much more attention to their senses or just have more acute ones, something pretty similar to the senses of animals.
