Description I've been wanting to do this for quite a long time now, and I took the photos about two months ago already.
But I'm not that satisfied with what the slices look like, so I...didn't want to do it anymore until now xD

Anyway, I'm sorry for the bad quality/exposure of the photos, I had to do this using electrical light.
Also sorry for any language-mistakes, feel free to tell me if there are some significant ones.

The explanations might be a little short sometimes, but I didn't want this to become any longer than it already is.
If you have any questions - feel free to ask.

I definitely think if you played with some of the colors it would resemble a tomato more...But your tutorial gives me some ideas! Thank you for posting it!

Yeah it might xD
Perhaps I'll try again some day but I don't even use tomato slices that often, so I have't tried but once...

Thank you so much for your kind words!

Yep, agree.
Yet they _could_ look like tomatoes using that method

Pretty cool! I will test it soon.
If you use transparent Fimo/Polymer clay fΓΌr the inner tomato it would seem more real I think. :3

Definitely, transparent is always good when it comes to fruits and such.

hedspace77 [2010-03-18 01:30:47 +0000 UTC]

You did it! Yay!
I saw some people use a transparent fimo for the white middle bit. But this, is your own style so well done for that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to hedspace77 [2010-03-18 15:01:38 +0000 UTC]

YES
Hm, I've tried it with transparent one the first time I did this and it was sort of TOO transparent in the end. But it might be a good idea anyway, since tomatoes are rather watery in the middle. I suppose it just depends on the method which colours look good. (I still think these colours I used suck completely) I might try some different ones next time xD

Anyway, thank you!

hedspace77 In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-29 22:41:15 +0000 UTC]

Could you mix transparent with white?? What would happen?
Your efforts were great, now you could make bread slices for the tomato. ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to hedspace77 [2010-03-30 14:14:38 +0000 UTC]

Of course you could (Yes, I've tried that...Now you know what kind of stuff I do in my free time xDD)
Well, it basically looks like white in the end. But if you take 'a bit' more of the transparent clay you might be able to get something nice xD
I'll try that next time. Or I'll just think of a completely different way to make them.

Yeah, and some mozzarella
But...unfortunately I ran out of clay T_T

I think your talent for this clay modelling is wonderful.
Yes, I also think about these things too. ;D Could you make the yellow parts into actual seed shapes?

Well, there are many reasons to get some more clay, hehe. ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to hedspace77 [2010-04-09 10:17:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

Seed shapes...of course, it's a bit more complicated but possible. (Yay, another thing to do differently next time *_*)

Absolutely. Actually I got some more now, but I'll first of all do some cake-thingies I suppose

Eicats [2010-03-16 14:50:12 +0000 UTC]

You are so good at these! It's wrapping your mind around the slices you need lined up to make the completed round object that really impresses me.

I think the photos and tutorial look great, too. No language mistakes, really. Except you might want to consider saying off-white or pale instead of skin colored. (just because there are so many different skin colors!)

But keep the clay art coming- it's awesome!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to Eicats [2010-03-18 14:56:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!

You're right about that skin colour-thing. I didn't really think about it. That's to say...Yes, I did, because I wasn't sure which term to use. And then I checked on the wrapping to see what it's actually called, and since they used 'skin colour' I was like 'alright, I'll just use that' xD But 'pale' is good. Thank you

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Eicats In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-18 19:16:50 +0000 UTC]

I know- Crayola crayons had a color called skin or flesh (can't remember for sure) for many, many years until they changed it. Which I always found strange when I was kid because even though I'm caucasian, the crayon sure didn't match the skin of me or anyone I knew. lol

Anyway, I'm sidetracking your comments! Don't mean to take away from the tutorial because you really did a great job, as usual. I envy your clay skills.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to Eicats [2010-03-19 19:41:28 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely, the thing is these so-called skin-crayons are usually like...bright orange

But I should definitely stop babbling about that now xD

Thanks again!

XFadedToBlackX In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-18 15:45:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it is. This tutorial makes me wanna buy some clay and try to make something cute ^^ Although I don't think I can find the one that can be baked :/ In my town I can only find the one for kids. The other one is the real clay, so it stiffens(before that it's like mud) and then you need to paint it with acrylics or something...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-03-19 19:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh cute things are great I love making cakes at the moment, you got so many possibilities there *_*
Too bad. In my town there's only one shop that sells Fimo, I'm really glad about that (it's quite expensive, though >__<)
I'd love to try Sculpey as well, but it's not easy to get in Germany...
I've used the sort of clay that stiffens a few years ago, it's also nice, but much harder to shape.
Anyway, I hope you find some nice clay somehow!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

XFadedToBlackX In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-20 16:56:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... one was over today, a history test, I kinda screwed it up. And now I remembered I'm supposed to do something for the school play, me and two other girls are supposed to make two statues of Oscar! And I have no idea out of what to make it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-03-24 18:48:17 +0000 UTC]

Statues!? Oh, I'd so screw that up.
Of course you could always use some close-grained polystyrene or something, at least it wouldn't be heavy then, but it often looks a little cheap or breaks easily. Or perhaps some lightweight wood, that's usually easy to shape.
I mean that typical statue-material is _so_ heavy O.o
Anyway, I have noo idea
But you'll manage! ...Good luck

XFadedToBlackX In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-24 22:49:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, we thought about making the skeleton out of a wire, cover it with sponge and then just cover the sponge with clay and spray it with a golder spray. But I still don't know if that would work out well. My plan B was to see if we could find two volunteers so we could put body paint on them XD But I don't even know if I could find any kind of a body paint.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-03-25 14:28:42 +0000 UTC]

Or you could use papier-mΓ’chΓ© to cover the wire, it usually works very well.
The body paint-idea is great xD Haha, I suppose if I was a statue in that case, I'd ruin everything by laughing during the play or something .____.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

XFadedToBlackX In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-25 14:33:23 +0000 UTC]

What's that papier-mΓ’chΓ©? It sounds ok, lol.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-03-25 14:42:46 +0000 UTC]

It's a mix of paper and some binder, usually paste or some other kind of glue. There you also need some wire as a basis, and then it's just covered with that mixture. Similar to clay when it comes to the method, it's just lighter and, because of the glue-thingy, quite sturdy as well.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

XFadedToBlackX In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-25 14:46:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's what I need! But damn it, I can't find it in my town!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QueEnOfNights In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-03-25 15:07:30 +0000 UTC]

Hm yeah, there are basically two 'methods': If the wire has many gaps (or rather: if not that much wire is used) it might be a good idea to just use wallpaper paste/ any glue mixed with water and then take stripes of newspaper, put them into the glue and then cover the wire until there is a decent layer.
It's also possible to use flour as glue, there are some useful videos:
[link]
[link]

And the second method is to put the newspaper directly in the glue and actually mix it, like I said before.

Anyway, in both cases, especially the second one, of course, it's useful to put some wadded newspaper among the wires. Of course you could also use sponge, but this is perhaps a little easier. At any rate by doing so it will look much more realistic and it's also easier to put the paper around the wire.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

XFadedToBlackX In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-26 14:03:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's exactly what I was searching for! Something that involves paper! Yay, thank you very much, you helped me a lot! Apparently, you know a lot about crafty stuff. I only draw XD
Anyway, I think this is way better than using the sponge cause it's not that easy to cut it and shape it, And this is better than any kind of clay or anything cause it's lighter. Really, thanks a lot!

QueEnOfNights In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-03-27 14:44:13 +0000 UTC]

Not really, nowadays apart from that fimo-business I only draw as well, I just liked crafting a lot when I was younger *_*

OO

QueEnOfNights In reply to x-Mana-chan-x [2010-03-01 15:18:50 +0000 UTC]

x-Mana-chan-x In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-03-02 14:31:00 +0000 UTC]

Ja, super Geschenk xD
Aber das mit den Farben stimmt schon.. bei normalen Farben, mischt man sich ja auch besser selber was zusammen, damit das realistischer wird, als das aus dem Kasten oder der Tube

Ja was, meine Verwandten mΓΆgen sowas xD
