Description Here's a pen sketch i just did of a Gigantosaurus. Referenced from "A feild guide to Dinosaurs: the essential handbook for travellers in the mesozoic" by Luis V. Rey.
I'd recommend it to -any- dinosaur lover. It's created like dinosaurs are alive now, like how the artist thinks they look like, how they behave, what precautions to take around certain ones. Stuff like that, awesome!
Anyhow, i used my sketching pen set (adore them) which always turn out mucky and eargh! but or well.
Like this may look real scribbly...well...it is...but it looks way better in real life. I am real proud of it though!
anyway, whats some pen-sketching tips? shading is sooo hard...thats where the eugh-ness comes from.

I thought...hmm...why was the Spinosaurus in Juressic Park 3 portrayed so large?
Thanks

Yeah, that was ... so unreal. it kinda killed the fun for me. I mean, before seeing that nonsense it was all cool for a third episode.

Qwiven In reply to Niohoggr [2008-08-21 21:02:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so it isn't supposed to be that big?
I don't mind though i mean, maybe with a more accsessable food source it would grow larger? and the digital rendering was awesome, i just love seeing the dinos clomp around.
Also, about unreal. In king kong they have that diplodocus (?) stampede. Sauropods couldn't have actually run, they were so heavy that if they did they would've broken their legs so that bit was a little 'hmmm' to me. Still interesting shot though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Niohoggr In reply to Qwiven [2008-08-24 17:54:11 +0000 UTC]

Nope, they shouldn't grow that big.
but I too loved the rendering!!! Oh to think how good the first episode's dinosaurs were even though they were made with age old amigas.
That and I loved the idea of - near - sentient raptors in the third.
Yeah. sauropods - the giant ones - most likely were quite slow. There was a species of sauropods, a "longneck" that could only take one step at a time with one foot out of the four. well, at least that is what palaentologists say now. Remember how Orwell got the iguanodon all wrong?

I find that thinking about some far fetched excuse makes me feel better.
Love the fight, but it most liekly wouldn't have fought with its jaws i have read, mainly because they are so long and 'vulnerable'.
Awesome, i so want the movies!
Yes! Awesome! So really cool, love the raptors!
Really? which one?
I reckon they would've HAD to live in heards, it'd be just so easy for a theropod to come up alonside it and bit its neck. They would've had to just be protected by the bodies of the other dinosaurs.
No, what happened? (i shall google it!)
What do you think about tsintaosaurus? I read in a fairly recent museum that scientists were thinking that the 'spike' was actually from the skull breaking and part being forced upwards. but that doesn't explain why every skeleton has the same horn. Interesting. I used to want to be a paleonologist.

Niohoggr In reply to Qwiven [2008-08-26 16:04:39 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if they are planning to make a fourth episode or not, but someone has to focus on the raptors! They deserve a bit more attention. Though, there wee good document films on National Geographic a year ago or so, which was like a safari film when the cameracrew follows the days of a lion and it's pride. I love that film they done in this fashion with raptors! I can't recall the title tough... nor the sauropod's name *fails* But, I do know that they lived in herds, and used ther strong tail and sheer bodymass as protection.
And, though you probably know now, Orwell thought that the iguanodon was a fourlegged creature. That and he portrayed the longnecks all wrong: he thought the tail was the neck!
Ah, tsintaosaurus was an interesting species. I did not knew about the whys of their head ornament, it reminds me a but of a paralophusaurus'... only worn backwards...
When it comes to skulls, I have a fascination toward Pachycephalosauruses. Now their heads are built to last! XD That, and I heard that the T-rex and the woodpecker shared a few things in common in their skulls' bone structure? Both are "designed" to take on quite heavy impacts.
That and I still want to be a palaentolgist! Even thought I can't, screwed up at school...

Qwiven In reply to Niohoggr [2008-08-26 21:12:49 +0000 UTC]

Well how long were the intervals between movies. If it was 4 years and the last one was made 4 years ago theres a chance.
Walking with dinosaurs? That's pretty much what you descibed but it follows all soughts of dinosaurs. There is also walking with Beasts (early mammels...the big ones) and walking with monsters (not really sure whats in that one)
Yeah, it makes sense. I think it was diplodocus...possibly...
I couldn't find it on google (probably typed in the wrong words) Wasn't it a four-legged creature that could walk on all fours and hindlegs?
Lol...but would the skull be slightly obvious?

Awesome! I was sick home one day from school and watched this documentory about if t-rex's were hunters or scavengers (i wasn't as interested in dinosaurs then and probably watched it because i couldn;t reach the remote )
Why can't you still be one? They may have a uni course for paleontology that doesn't require stuff to high? or maybe you could have an apprenticeship?

Niohoggr In reply to Qwiven [2008-08-27 11:12:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well sort of, but his "impression" how the legs were joined to the body, and the whole apperance of the creature was way off. That and when he found that longneck dinosaur, the bones were all scattered around so he hadn't really have a chance to put it back together correctly without paying more attention to the skulls. Which he did not do at the time - or so it seems. Interesting fact is that if he would've asked the native african tribe that knows the mokele m'bembe he'd have gotten excellent details as to how the creature really looks like.

well, I still hope that I can find a way to gather some knowledge in palaentology one day. I always thought that there is some sort of magic at work when palaentologists go out to the field to excavate a dino. It is the great combination of mild physical and mental work, with a great prize at the end. Not to mention there are still thousands of species waiting to be discovered.

Qwiven In reply to Niohoggr [2008-08-29 09:59:37 +0000 UTC]

Ooh...lol
How did the tribe know? and who's mokele m'bembe

I reckon that with a job like that, they'd be several ways to get in. Even if you started to work at a museum, then at the dino part of a museum. Then where they got the skeletons from, and gradually work yourself into the buisness. I wish you luck with that! You'll have to discover the Niohoggrsaurous!

Niohoggr In reply to Qwiven [2008-08-29 16:41:20 +0000 UTC]

The tribe saw apatosauruses. Real live ones - well according to them.
Fact is they did give a precise descrption of it, all the while there is absolutely no chance of them seeing one in a museum, or seeing one in fossil form.

Hmm, maybee you're right. I don't want to give up on it completely.
And thank you for the luck!

I don't know exactly, but [link] and [link] seems to have quite much information about it. Or them.
And when we think about it being just a hoax, I'd remind you that before they brought in a live specimen the biologist thought the mountain gorilla is a nonsense.

Lol i wasn't very good then lol We were talking to some year 12's from school, and one guy had written a novel when he was in year 9. He was all "And for all the art stuff, you will improve so much like, i re-wrote my story" or something like that. I like that...because it means i'll be able to draw so much more so much better! though at the time i'll probably not be any keener on my art then now lol
I thought about doing that, i just gotta find a picture i have drawn that i actually like

Meh, i dislike it all. Its funny, i see this picture that, when i drew it, i was all 'omigawsh awesome'. now i am like...'aahaha...embarressingly bad.'

lol i guess its that thing that artists hate their art and see faults in it when nobody else does

Cool, how many pages? do you get a certain type? i feel the pages of my sketch-pads before i bye them and try to see my hands shadow through them, to determine the width and the smoothest. i bet that sounds weird but it works, get a smooth one were you hand isn't to obvious seen through it is really satisfying to draw on.
I love looking back and not likeing what i see, because it shows the improvement. i should upload some of my earlier stuff in a comparison thing like you said...lol...funny

Are your friends arty? cuz if their not it could just be that they are jealous or don't understand how you like it. Luckily my friends like art, so we can talk about it. Don't think you suck! think positive! art is much more satisfying that way!! (and you don't suck anyway)

Well I usually buy anything from a 100 to 250 sheer Sketch pad.. I almost ALWAYS buy bristol it the best brand I can think of. Durable for everything, Strathmore is also a great brand. I usually buy there watercolor pads.
Yeah it really does too.. Im not very good anyways so eh, I always find something wrong with my work. But yeah you really should people would be interested on what the first drawing of Qwiven looked like.

No not at all... They all are into sports or stuff like socializing all of the time.. I am usually the only one off in my corner drawing. Well I guess I don't suck.. lets just say I rather be better than I am at the moment. Thankyou.. I appreciate it.

Qwiven In reply to fawnet [2008-08-18 21:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Not my current sketchpad, but the one i had before that had heaps of pages but the paper was quite thin. Egh...i couldn't do two pen sketches on either side of the sheet. And we don't have bristol down here and Aus i don;t think, i'll look around though.
I have taken an idea from one of the boys in my class. He takes a sketchbook to classes with him, so now i am to. I do some of my best doodling in class, just for something else to do!
Egh...i do have one of my first ever pictures...its like i had a vendetta on this peice of paper and used my paint brush to attack it!
She looked pretty much the same as now, though i am thinking about changing what she looks like now. I need to get revved up to do a drawing of my idea for the 'new' qwiven design.

Oh well, you win some and you lose some. I'm sure they'll come around.
I think every artist on DA is trying to improve lol

Yeah I do that too I have been doing that for 2 years now. My teachers and friends steal it though and are all like..
O.O Wierd... Haha I have alot of my first pics... Actually my first pic I drew with crayon on wood of my familys heads xD.
Really? Hmm... My characters form slowly until they totally rock xD. Yeah a new Qwiven would be cool. Add another color ;} .

My brand i go by is Quill i have just remmeber, and i use a mechanical 0.5 pencil, a 'stanley eraser' (my name for it) and an ellectric eraser. My stuff may be cheap and peiced together, but i love it!
Lol i used to just draw in the margins and around the work. I got in trouble so much in the earlier years, nobody cared this year though! lol its just more organised.
