Description
After the Rus' essay, I'm going to do what I can to not TL;DR this |'DAnyhow, Gaul or "Gallia" as Rome named her.
Because she is most likely a girl, though most of the other ancients were never entirely certain (well, except Rome, of course). Oldest child of the semi-mythological Grandmother Celt, Gaul idolised her mother and lived her life as close she could to her legacy, even using her name where she could to declare her rightful heritage.
As with most of the other ancients, she and Rome had something of a love-hate relationship. Despite finding him attractive and intriguing, much of her interest in him was spoiled by his attempts to control her - she was far too much of a free spirit to let him to tell her what to do. That, and much about him just plain pissed her off - they'd been bickering ever since they first met as children, and when they did occasionally come together, their seemingly cheerful and friendly conversations were fraught with underlying aggression . Their relationship didn't escalate into full blown war until Rome tricked her under the pretense of friendship – offering his assistance in fending off attackers before taking the opportunity to strike her from behind.
The years of fighting which followed eventually left Rome victorious. Defeated, Gaul's pride and spirit were mostly crushed, and whilst she readily accepted he had won, a part of her clung to the past, holding on where she could in shame of having failed her grandmother.
Two possibilities for her end - Firstly, she could have stayed until the arrival of the Franks (which Hidekaz has said he has considered making a character of), and was killed when they took over. Alternatively, finding her strength and will growing weaker each day, in the end her only choice was to leave, placing her children under Rome's care (Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland and her successor son of the same name who would grow up to become France under the influence of the Franks). She headed East, joining Great Grandmother Anatolia whom she'd often visited as Galatia where she lived out the rest of her days.
She often comes across as brash, vocal and blunt, but what seems to be a loud and energetic exterior disguises an active and manipulative mind. Rome always saw her as 'feisty', not beyond getting into brutal brawls when words were no longer enough. Whilst she and Germania both had their feuds with Rome, they despised each other all the more - especially when it came to whose kids were whose.
I'd be lying if I said she wasn't inspired just a little by Asterix.
Again, disclaimer that this is a rather simplified version of events (I don't like getting individual tribes involved or everything would just go nuts). played with the idea of making Gaul the same as Celt, but in the end I decided it would probably work best this way due to Celtic origins being so crazy. Though this does mean I now may need to do a Celt portrait orz
Ah, and she does mostly fight with a sword. I just wanted to draw her with an axe :’<
Next on the list - Baltia/Aestii.

Excuse me, may I use your Gaul for a roleplay? I'll be changing her up quite a bit, of course, considering it's an AU, but I was wondering if I could use your picture and your basic outline. (Like what kids are hers, how she acts, etc.)

Well if it's an AU (where she's not a geo-political entity), then I am fine with you using her as long as you make sure to keep her personality/characteristics and relationships the same Some sort of credit would also be appreciated, if possible.

No, no nations, they're humans. And thank you, I'll keep her personality the absolute same, though I may have to do a tiny bit of changing on how she knows the other Ancients, to make it make sense. (i.e. she'll still despise Germania, just over different things) Also, of course I'll give you credit! Thanks so much! <3
Btw, I adore all of your artwork, and I've been stalking it for quite a bit. I would've commented sooner, but I didn't have a deviantart account, and wasn't sure how it all worked. Everything that you've written about all of them, with a few tiny details, has created my headcanon, and I have learned so much about the Ancients from you. You're very awesome~. *o*

Rome actually was never very creative on some aspects - they had a pre-nationalism pride, but they gladly had no calm about taking stuff from other cultures if this worked better... The roman legions, by example, taking ideas from some neighbooring peoples (or less close ones).
From gauls they goit also... til.. something, the farming instrument with horses or oxes to plow(?) the ground, I think - sorry, not a native english speaker. Also, pants from Gauls and/or Germanic tribes - the romans, specialy soldiers, who lived north in those colder regions took it upon even if the old fashined roman frowned; but everyone ended takign pants in time. x3
The so-called barbarians had often a more sophisticated culture than expected...

nyehehe.. I am no historian, but I like history as a subject. ^^
Ahh, I see. ^^
So, for your efforts, R-ninja, have this very fitting song; "Le chant des druides" (The Druids's Chant), by Manau, a band of... celtic rap. (So fantasy-like this song..)
[link]
(Albeit to be technical, its a bit incorrect; the Gaul Celtic language disapeared actually, and the celtic language and minority of Brittany came, as the name suggest, from a sort of invasion/settlement by Briton, celtic Britain (era) across the sea... And Lancelot was a Britanny knight!)

Yes, its a bit complex and academic - the Brittanic language belong to the 'insular' celtic family I think, related to the language of Cornwall 9King ARthur!) and Welsh and such, i think, and Irish perhaos - different branch(es) of celtic than Gaulish, Celticberic and such.
Like French vs Catalan, romance languages but different parts of the family, so to speak.
There is some difference in gramars, rules, etc...

The gauls and other celts had complex links to germanic peoples - some historians and others think they are closely related families of languages at least in the indo-european large group.
The famous Belgians tribes may have been mixed celts and germanics, by example.

Here's the early history of Gaul, before she fell: She liked to kill Rome's ass, and she liked to kick it hard.
It's kind of hilarious actually, like how England would join the other side of the fight just to beat up France, Gaul would join up with who ever was against Rome so she could kill Romans XD
Unfortunately for the people who's side she was on, she often ignored what they wanted her to do and just blazed into battle to kick Roman ass. Battle of Zama, anyone?
This OC is adorable, and I like how she looks a little bit wild :3 Thanks for the extra history too!

Being countries they probably just actually appear one day. But, hey who knows. I like to think about it. If Gaul would be France's mother could it be possible that the Franks character, if made, could be the dad? I always imagined Gaul as a guy, but it would probably make more sense for her to be a woman.

R-ninja In reply to LostInTheRain [2010-06-13 02:20:43 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, the Franks definitely come into it somewhere along the line. Hidekaz has already said he was trying to think up the Franks as a character and that he saw them as some kind of father figure to France. Now it's just a matter of somehow including France's Latin heritage in there too.

In all honestly it sounds so confusing trying to figure out who a countries family members would be. It almost gives me a headache. Oh so the Franks character might be Francis' dad? That's interesting. I wish he'd hurry up and tell us more about the ancients then.
