Everything about this shot is so nice, the focus, lighting, draining of saturation, just very nice. Only i think maybe more contrast, but I just might be a contrast nut

This picture works very well with the focus in the middle.
My son spend 15 months, that seemed like forever, at Camp Taji, and is getting ready to redeploy back to Iraq for a second tour. He says the one good thing about being in Iraq is that it isn't Afghanistan.

Great shot. I like how the soldier in the middle is the main point of the photo, everyone else is out of focus. He looks very alone even though he's surrounded by people, his expression is very powerful aswell.

no, that's ok if you put it in the middle.. the rule of the thirds is a way to put something on "relevance" because in the photo your attention will be moved uncosciously to another thing.. here it's all unfocused except that soldier, so your attention is, without any doubt, focused there. you don't need to put it on a "point of interest" to make it "relevant".. also the feeling of sadness and dramaticity is increased if he is "perceptually alone" in the middle. I'm a photography student, I hope my theories will be useful in your work. congratulations for the DD and for your good gallery!

it works in a weird way on the rule of thirds.. two people in front are out of focus and 3 behind.. gives an illusion of thirds!

That pic is just great! Rules in art are lines that need sometimes to be crossed to express emotions! And this is truly a success! I love it
