Line art for this beast.. took a while to do but I think it's worth it! I'm not going to use this line art for myself (still can't cell shade to save my life) but if anybody wants to have a go at colouring it please go ahead. Gimme a note and I'll send you the full quality line art, so you get crisper detail ^^ also let me know when you finish, so I can see itRelated content

Wow O_O This is awesome too, and it kind of sets the standard for what I should be doing. may I ask, how long did it take you, and how heavily ref'd is it? Most of my drawings aren't very detailed, I should try to do linearts like this so that I can have definite detail that will go into the finished piece, instead of just kind of figuring it out while I shade lul
Sorry, I realize that you did this three years ago and prolly don't remember, I just try to keep up with people who are the same age as me XD

The sketch itself took around 15 hours..I think. I ended up not using this lineart, since I preferred to colour over the sketch. All of the references I had available to me can be found here:

The concept sketches by WETA Workshop are awesome. The pose was my own, so there were occasions when the angles which the references showed didn't cover what I needed (like some of the back armour) so I had to make it up :3

Wow that's a long time for a sketch O_O I normally take like a max of 5-10 hours for a finished piece, coloring and all, of course i've never done anything as ambitious as you (I've never done scenes and such, just character designs... boring XD)
But yeah if I wanted to draw something like that I'd have to ref EVERYTHING XD. If I don't even my poses look weird, i need to practice drawing poses and bodies.
But yeah I really like EVA's style, I like smooth lines and elegant contours for futuristic robots and stuff, many designs I find too blocky. For example, space marines are awesome, I just prefer the tau and eva-type futuristic designs for this, just a personal preference I guess.
But you really captured it, and I know first hand how difficult it is to make these elegant contours look good and be in correct 3d at the same time so props to you

It is indeed a long time for a sketch.
Then again, that's to be expected- I'm the slowest artist in the world X3 I work very slowly and make lots of mistakes, so I usually spend a disproportionate amount of time on my paintings.
My most recent project is probably clocking in excess of 100 hours >.<
I agree with your point on design- Eldar look beautiful and the Tau feature some of the most badass mechanical design GW has done. There's something about the gothicness of the Space Marines which I find really quite endearing though :3 There's a lot more scope for decoration and individuality, whereas Eldar and Tau kind of restric that somewhat with the requirement for very clean lines.
I don't think I've ever drawn a Tau though, I should perhaps remedy that..

I really like the chaos marines because they are like normal marines but ornate and sort of medieval looking, scratch that, I like all space marines, its just that normal ones have gold carving awesomeness and chaos ones have black / purple ones I just like everything 40k in general XP
Mind you I've never actually looked that much into WH20k art, (only played the DoW games) I should for inspiration. Do you know of any artbooks or anything?

The only 40k artbook I know is the Horus Heresy set: [link]
I had a browse throught that particular book last week- there a lot of really mediocre art in there (where the hell some of those artists came from I don't know, but you need spend less than 10 minutes on deviantART to find better fanart than a lot of the stuff in there) but there are also some really beautiful paintings by pro GW artists (Adrian Smith particularly- you should check out his Emperor V Horus painting if you haven't already).
It's deffo worth a look, though I'm not sure if shelling out £30 for it is justified.
