She presented herself as Adrienne Hubert, brandishing a wry smile and the attitude of someone who knows her way around everything. She also spoke French in a way I found a bit odd, which I later found to be the way all true Parisians speak, and her demeanor was easy going and informal, so distant from Madelyn’s composure. Even the contents of her little introductory speech could not have been more different than those of the person who had preceded her. She looked determined to make all of us understand that there were many reasons why, basically, she is never going to be considered a serious candidate to the role of heroine, but also that if, by some weird twist of fate, this school had been able to turn her into one, then there would never again be any doubt that the greatest heroes in all of France were gathered here. […] I am not sure about the wisdom of presenting yourself on your first day of school as a possible abysmal failure, but for sure she at least showed that, despite her default attitude, she is capable of great humility and does not overestimate herself. And judging from the way Mlle.
