Xenoswamp: Experimenting Using P S to Paint

Okay, I've never done a character from scratch painting in Photoshop. I've painted on photo bases, etc., but never freehand and without any reference before. I sat down and looked for a background that inspired me, and found this lovely swamp by *indigodeep

The roots in the water reminded me of undulating xenomorph tails, so I decided to do Raul at rest in a peaceful, natural environment.

I started with his head and played around with dodge and burn to make smooth and textured areas, then moved down his body.

I may tweak him further, as I am a compulsive tweaker...but I think I did what I'd set out to do in terms of experimenting. I'm sure there are points needing improvement, and any advice will be welcomed. This is a learning piece, and unless you say nasty stuff about my honey lamb sweety pie xeno (not the pic, but the actual alien), I'll take it for the offer of help it was meant to be
