Description Gryphons are, anatomically-speaking, really bizarre creatures to think about. If this is an animal made of an avian and a quadruped, then what you'd think of as the gryphon's front legs are technically hind legs. This means to fit together believably it's either got to have two pairs of shoulders (wings/front legs) or two pelvises (front legs/back legs.) Because cramming a bunch of shoulder blades together probably wouldn't work very well, I fused the two halves by extending the avian tailbone into the quadruped spine, melding the two ribcages into one, and giving it two pairs of hips.

OMG! I am trying to work out gryphons and I did the same kind of thing, two hips! But mine look stranger, and fat. I was trying to figure out how flexible the thing would be in the back. I am very frustrated with it, I just don't do gryphons! Thank you for making this, it helps out a lot! *grabs a new piece of paper*

Ha~ That's amazing!
I never thought of how they would end up with two sets of back legs or how their wings would be their front legs essentially.
Overall, nice job with the drawing and well thought out anatomy!

I never understand how to draw a creature can have four legs AND a set of wings (which is the main reason I prefer wyverns to normal dragons, as they have only two wings and two hind legs and are therefore more believable) but the way you drew it here makes this much more realistic in a fantasy kind of way Plus I just love how you drew the bones, they are very detailed and remind me of museum sketches 83 -stuffs it into my overflowing pictures folder-.

Ooooh yeaah! That's what I've been looking for quite some time. So that's the way they are constructed My drawings should make much more sense now

nicely done, although I accidently put this in the wrong folder...*Sigh*

I think one possible way for a griffin to be more realistic would be to have just 4 limbs, then put claws on the wings for the creature to walk on all fours.

HOLY CRAP. This is absolutely brilliant. I have been slaving away trying to figure out the anatomy for dragons, and it's a very tricky business with two sets of shoulder blades. I had toyed with the idea of the shoulders having a hip joint rather than shoulder blades, but I couldn't figure out a plausible way to do it. But you have it pinned, very good thinking!

I actually have a better one lying around somewhere but I can't remember if I ever scanned it, I think it's a couple years old now x_x I'd done the skeleton, then the musculature, then the feathers/fur/etc and was going to put them all together but never finished it for whatever reason.

Dug it out of my October 2005 folder just for you XD I'll probably never finish it although if I'm ever bored enough I may redraw it entirely, here's the skeleton part: [link]

The problem was that the skeleton looked alright to me, but once I added the musculature and so on, the anatomy looked off (especially the feet, they seemed way too small.)

Very cool! I might just try a muscular chart based off of this one day Too clever to pass up

I've often thought that it'd work better to have a second pair of shoulderblades for the wings BELOW the ribcage. This would make room for all the needed muscle structure, and then all the lift would come from the center, instead of having the lift coming from the front with the back end just hanging and creating drag.

I dunno, I like your idea too. Very cool drawing...

Thank you ^^ I sometimes use it as an anatomy reference for when I draw live gryphons, so it's pretty useful.
