Description
Hello there Fillies and Gents! Here's a simple ref of my pegasus pony Isla West! Enjoy this much neater and tidier reference!Name: Isla West
Nickname(s): Keys, Key West, MarinaGal
Gender: Female
Special Somepony: --- none ---
Species: Pegasus
Cutiemark: Light Blue Circle with Two Coral Wave Designs (waves at sunset)
Occupation: Pro Surfer, Beach Bum, Surfboard Designer, Avid Shell Collector.
Family: Pearly White (cousins on her Mother's side)
Personality: Chipper, Athletic, Spunky, Spontaneous, Rather Shy, Socially Awkward, Book Smart
Aspirations: Isla wanted to be a marine biologist, but after obtaining her cutie mark making her first surfboard, she's been preoccupied with that craft, and hasn't turned back since. Her surfboards all have her signature resin marble 'eye' pattern.
Boards: the surfboards she makes are custom built, and she often asks the client for a marble, piece of glass, or small important object to put in the nose of the board encapsulated in a small circle of resin. This is her signature addition to the board, and says that having a little piece of the owner brings good luck out on the big waves.
Her Notable Boards:
1. First Board [light blue marble]
(name: Mango Fish) Longboard : breadfruit wood : glassed w/ coral and light blue stripes
2. Second Board [carved bone totem]
(name: Polly) Longboard : balsa wood : glassed w/ classic clear with decal of a macaw
3. Third Board [black plastic skull]
(name: Jolly Rodger) Gunner : polyurethane foam : glassed w/ black glitter epoxy resin
Isla has lived on the shores of the ocean for her whole life, and started surfing when she was just a little filly. Her cousin, Pearly White, often sends her little pearl trinkets for her birthday, and Isla loves to braid them into her dreads. She almost always wears her seashell and pearl necklace and considers it her good-luck charm.
Note: If you want an Isla West surfboard for your pony, just let me know! She'd be more than happy to personalize one for your crazy wave-chaser!
Cutie Mark:
As a young filly, Isla spent a lot of time with her older cousin Pearly White diving for pearls. Unfortunately, she had troubles diving due to the fact that she would get swept around by the undercurrents because she has a terrible habit of unfurling her wings under the water due to the fact that she wasn't the strongest swimmer. She would panic a little, and this behavior didn't go unnoticed. Pearly started getting anxious about this, and told little Isla she couldn't come diving anymore. Isla was heartbroken and spent that day's dive pacing the beach trying to figure out what it was she did wrong. Perhaps it was that she was a terrible swimmer?
In truth, it wasn't something she did wrong, Pearly was just worried about her little cousin injuring herself. It was much easier for a unicorn to use her magic to collect pearls after all.
But little Isla wasn't about to give up. Instead, she started thinking about ways she could get out on the water without having to swim. (Well, at least for the time being until she became a stronger swimmer) She spent the evening wandering up and down the shoreline, nose to the sand. and very lost in thought. It was then when she was nearly knocked off her hooves by a piece of driftwood. She stared at it for a while, frowning about how it had nearly taken her out, but then realized something. The wood floated. It was miraculous! She tapped the old wood with a hoof, watching how the flat wood moved along the surface of the water so smoothly. Slowly and shakily, she put her front hooves on the wood and moved forward with her hind legs. She moved! Isla was giddy now, and just before she could wade out into the surf, she heard her parents call.
This little piece of driftwood would become the focus of the filly's days; she would run it out into the surf, stay afloat for a few seconds, then topple off into the brine. So she started thinking about just how the wood moved through the water. How could she make it better? Isla finally decided on reshaping the thing. Perhaps she could make a surfboard? Well, she could only try.
It took Isla quite some time to perfect the wood, and since the board's main issue was a small hole at the nose, she had to figure out a way around it. She eventually decided to fill in the space with an old marble from her collection, covering it in resin to make sure it stayed in place in the hole, and that everything was still nice and flat. It was light blue, and when the board was in the water, it reflected the bright ocean water wonderfully. Soon it was ready. She pushed the board out into the ocean's water, and leapt. kicking the board up over the first couple short waves. But then there was a large swell; the water rose, and little Isla passed over two rather large waves, their crests rolling high above her head. She pushed through them. Once past and after some paddling, Isla was out to where she knew Pearly White did her dives - she'd show her cousin she wasn't just a filly. She could do this! Standing up on her board, Isla took a deep breath. And then, she dove.
Of course, Pearly had been preparing her diving gear for the afternoon, and arrived at the beachfront just as she saw Isla hit the water. She panicked. But there was little she could do. She rushed to get her gear on, shaking and an utterly nervous wreck, and dashed into the water as quickly as she could. But by that time, a very drenched but very smug Isla was paddling her way back to the shore, a large clam secure in her mouth.
"Look what I did, Pearly!" She shouted, kicking her board up onto the sand and dropping the clam onto the beach.
For a long moment, Pearly couldn't say anything. Isla finally spoke up again. "Let's open it!" Pearly sighed, still shaking some. But she obliged, nodding slowly. "Alright, let's go inside then." Isla pranced excitedly for a moment, then turned her attention back to her board. "I made this - so I could come back up to something. It's fun, Pearly." She grabbed her makeshift board and dragged it to the beach house, propping it against the deck. "I wanna do it again..." She followed Pearly inside, and watched as her cousin pried the clam open and snatched the pearl. It was a large, beautiful blueish pearl, and for a while, Pearly White stared at it. It was flawless; perfect! She smiled down at her little cousin, and tousled the small filly's mane with her hoof. "Stop giving me heart attacks, Isla - your parents would hate me if I lost you! Then who would babysit you, hmm? Oh - Oh Isla -" Pearly gasped. "You're cutie mark!"
Isla had seen a flash of light in the water when she was surfacing, but thought nothing of it until now. "Wow- crazy!" She said, looking back at her flank. "It looks really cool - kinda like a pearl! Am I a pearl diver like you, Pearly?" She said excitedly, looking up at her cousin.
"I don't think so, Isla, it looks more like the hole that was at the tip of your board. The marble you chose."
"Oh - how funny!"
"Regardless, Isla, I'm proud of you."
"Thanks Pearly -- that means the world to me!"
