Unicorns used to regard him as one of the great unicorns of history and unfortunately the long time away from Equestria has left him all but forgotten. He's often mentioned in lore as an alicorn though, which is most likely why the unicorns stopped associating with him.
There is some contriversy on how old Jupiter is exactly.
All agree that Jupiter is ageless though, and seem to be aware that a strong magic is what has been keeping him alive.
Locked away within his library, protecting his tomes from those who would use his writings for wrong. He continues to observe the world and continues to write about every little thing. He cannot leave his library, as the ward protecting it prohibits it, however other ponies can enter. The ward does notify him of this though, and he is always quick to address the (usually lost) traveller.

Jupiter was hired by the early alicorns to record history for all of Equestria. They sent him out to visit as much of the world as he could.
He had been travelling as a young colt, and recieved his cutiemark after he decided to keep personal notes of his travels.
He was regarded as the quickest writer of his time, and kept his mind sharp by memorizing his work. To date, he remembers every single thing he's written. There's not much else you can do when you're stuck in your library until the end of time.
Jupiter was given a library by the alicorns to house his life's work, and it was expected to become a great and valuable resource. After thieves kept trying to steal his books though, he hid it away from the world with his magic, fearing that he had written too much for the likes of Equestria. There were too many secrets in his writings that, should the information fall into the wrong hooves, could spell disaster.

Jupiter does collect books from outside the Library. These books are often ones brought by the travellers who stumble across his library, and more often than not he'll ask for some work of writing in exchange for a piece of information. Much like a wiseman asks for a small token for his words.
His tomes are kept in the very back and innermost chamber of the Library. Technically, this is the seventeenth floor of the place.

"Jupiter's Scrolls" or "Jupiter's Gold" are what ponies have called his writings, since they were all kept in golden scroll cases or book covers of his own design. This is his favorite part of his craft; he says it allows him to feel at ease since it marks the completion of a tome.
There are exactly eight books and two scrolls that had been stolen from this library and never returned. These are believed to be in the hooves of various powers throughout the world, serving as powerful status symbols. They are as follows.

This cult has three books that remain under lock and key at all times.
(Jupiter does not approve of this, and views the cult in a rather negative light, but he cannot intervene. It is against his duties, and would require him to leave the library.)(Okay... Imagine the perpetually disappointed father - good, now throw in a little romantic poet. Okay - now add continuous cups of coffee for the next couple thousand years and you've got Jupiter! Congrats!)
