Description It was never clear to me in the movie, Legend, how the horn of the unicorns would give Lord Darkness power over Light. Thus, I am compelled to think he really wanted that unicorn to *compensate* for something he lacked. I'm pretty sure Sigmund Freud would totally agree with me.

Anyway, in case no one knows who this is, that's Lord Darkness with Lily (the dark version). I've always wanted to fanart Ridley Scott's Legend. I grew up with that film and, til this day, I love the music and fantasy set-up. Tim Curry was absolutely delicious as the Lord Darkness.

There are other reasons why I wanted to do this aside from fangirling over the movie and getting ready for the conventions. On a personal level, I like what this image represents and hope people can appreciate the pair-up. I am a firm supporter of the dark arts, particularly its role on revealing the darker sides of the human psyche.

Creating this piece was a challenge. There wasn't many good sources to refer to when creating this, so I had to watch the film again and again while taking creative liberties. It's also done in traditional medium so there wasn't much room to screw-up. I'm happy with how it came out though! I've found that, since I started working digitally for the past years of my life, my traditional work has improved greatly.

The original painting (which is roughly 20-x30) will be sold at the conventions. Hopefully I can get it to Dragoncon since I'll be attending it this year. In fact, this piece is a bit of a homage to my favorite artist, Julie Bell. She was among the artists who juried the entries for the artist alley. To realize that my childhood idol looked at my gallery and gave me the greenlight to attend the artist alley section means a lot to me. In fact, while painting this I had one of her prints (which I bought several years ago) in front of me to give me inspiration.

Unicorns had the power of creation and light in the movie so maybe if Darkness could kill the unicorns or at least get their horns, then there would be no more sun?  Maybe he didn't want to use the power of light, just snuff it out?

Right on all counts. Actually, Darkness states his intention of destroying the light early on in the movie.

You've really captured Darkness there.

The unicorn horn had a lot of magic power in it.  That's why simply holding the horn against the unicorn's forehead actually reattached the horn and brought the unicorn back to life.  But it would have helped to drive the point home if we had ever seen the horn being used as a weapon.

Thank you so much! Darkness was my favorite character in that movie. To this day, the practical effects that brought him to life stands strong. Everything about the movie put me in this surreal, magical place. I told myself that I had to do Darkness justice if I was ever going to paint him. One of my favorite depictions of him was the official cover art so I wanted to create something epic and kick-ass.

Yeah, we didn't get the chance to see the horn in action. The geek in me imagines it exploding with thunderbolts and laser beams that immediately incinerate enemies.

The main thing that I didn't like about the movie was Tom Cruise as Jack.  Don't get me wrong: I think Tom Cruise is a very talented actor.  But no matter whether he was in rags for his forest child look or in shining armor as the heroic knight, he still looked like a modern American.  He just DID NOT have the look for the part.

The other bit that annoys the heck out of me was the farm woman (Nell) telling Lily that a princess shouldn't be visiting poor folk.  To an extent, aristocratic women were expected to keep up with the lives and needs of the peasants on the family estate.  It would not have been so out of place for Lily to visit.  The part that didn't go along with expected behavior was how she was tramping all over the countryside alone with no servants, not even a maid.

Darkness looks fabulous in that movie.  Dark Lily looks fabulous in that movie.  Oona looks fabulous in that movie.  Gump looks fabulous in that movie.  The sets look fabulous in that movie.  It's one of the most visually gorgeous movies I've ever seen.

And Tim Curry was fabulous in that movie.  Not that that was a big surprise; he generally is.

Originally unicorns were associated with God and Jesus Christ in particular, their horns ever pointing to heaven as a reminder of God's love and his sacrifice to save humanity*. Darkness even comments about this early in the movie.

*I'm a nerd. I spent many of my middle school lunch hours tucked away in the library. One of the many books I devoured was about the history of unicorns in the western world, which is were I learned about their connection to the church.

Ah, I loved this movie as a kid, and I had somewhat recently rewatched it after so long. It might have lost a bit of the magic since when I was a kid (cheesy dialogue and a thin plot abound) but the visuals are beautiful and decadent. The "dancing dress scene" was a scene I've always felt to be hauntingly beautiful. And of course the Lord of Darkness is still a badass.

Anyways, a fantastic tribute to the film; this is gorgeous.

By Tim Curry's own account, the process of applying all those prosthetics took so long and was so frustrating that there were several times he lost his patience and was prepared to storm out...until he caught glimpse of himself in a mirror.

Were you ever lucky enough to see the original version? I'm assuming so, since it became available on DVD release. I wasn't a huge fan of the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. I preferred the original Jerry Goldsmith one. That version is also quite a bit longer. The reason is in the original script, Lily's singing was supposed to be a plot point or two. Well, Jerry Goldsmith wrote his score to go with the scenes where Lily sang, but Tangerine Dream's didn't...so they had to cut about 20 minutes from the whole movie. I think the Goldsmith score allows more focus on the action sequences in the film too. You tend to get "lost in the music" otherwise...although it's good in its own way.

It's heresy, I know, but I actually prefer the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.  Except for the final piece when they tried to sing.  They should have stuck to instrumental.  I also liked the Bryan Ferry song played over the credits in that version.

I didn't think that the footage cut from the movie was really all that much of a loss.  Except that it was nice to see why Gump no longer had his violin.  Touchy little fella.

Sure the plot was paper thin, but visually it's amazing! For working with little resources, you captured the characters perfectly (Darkness and Dark Lily looks awesome )

Well i think the big diablo went to some lowlife barrio mercado and was duped in by some brujillo chalamikero selling ground up chupacabra bones to heal sikness in the blood, then he told the diablo that the secret to" male enhancement" is to get some unicorn horn and grind it then mix it with some tekila (worm optional) then drink it down while dancing around a sombrero while listening to "la cucaracha"lol ...but realy i love this movie i think Tim did a great job playing the big diablo and this pic shows that wiked laughter he always did AWESOME!! as always i love your art!!
