Using a brush at a low opacity and slowly building up the shadows is usually what I do for anything that needs to be shaded.

The burn tool tends to just add black instead of adding complimentary colors to shadows like you're supposed to. As a result, a plastic and unrealistic shadow is often created, so I tend not to use it.
