Description
i have this under tutorials, but it's not really one so...whateverjust in case anyone was curious on how i draw equines, this is how i start 'em anyway.
1 - blue:
the head and neck are, to me, the most crucial points on a horse. if you don't have that decently drawn then you're kinda shot. if it's a profile, i just stick with a circle for the head, if not i add the triangle to show the eyes and down to the nose, where i draw, another, smaller circle (optional, on occasion i'll do that). i always add some kind of gesture for the ears, for Arabs it's a semi-circle because their ears are more curvy.
the neck line i kind of differ on, sometimes it's the crest that i draw first, sometimes the throat, others just right down the middle, it depends on the perspective. since the original had a lot of curve, i chose the crest.
2 -red:
i esstimate where the distant shoulder will be, and put a basic shoulder line there. then i draw in the basic geometrical shoulder-shape for the inside shoulder and add a rough line (for poses like this, since the front end is higher than the back) of where i want the top of the hind quarters to be. lastly, i add two more rough lines of, generally, where i want the front ankles to be.
3 -purple:
i love gesturing in front legs, i really do. especially high-set ones. this step is quite self-explainatory; circle for elbow, line down to knee, circle knee, line down to ankle, circle ankle, small line down to where the hoof will generally be or the top line of the hoof.
i work on the back next, making the appropriate curve from shoulder to hind quarters. back legs i have the most trouble with, so i have several methods: circle, oval, general hindquarter gesture (which was used here). then same method with the back legs as with the front. the distant hind leg is rougher and more boxy above the hock, it doesn't have to be too detailed.
4 -orange
i just add in the underbelly line and the general movement and direction of the tail.
lastly i add in the outline and general details of the horse. this takes practice, and i'm no master at it.
hopefully this helped some of you!

Oh, thank you! I've been looking for a lot of stuff for horses legs (because we all suck at them, in one way or another) and this is one of the most helpful drawings/explanations I've seen yet! Thanks!
