Description
While visiting family in Columbus, Ohio, I learned about how close Worthington, Ohio (home of the Ohio Railway Museum) was to Columbus. We decided that after visiting, we would visit Worthington. After a brief visit to the museum (since it was closed) we found these 2 ex-AMT units at Silcott Rail Equipment. I didn't expect seeing these two units here, so it was a sweet treat. I guess it was coincidental that I saw these units, and I will also be heading to Spencer, NC for the Streamliners at Spencer showcase.Related content

I think these are former CPRail units (at least 1304 is based on the winterization hatch), they pulled the commuter trains that ran by my place in Beaconsfield in the 90ies. If I understood correctly, many of these were picked up by the Quebec Central after AMT got rid of them and were dispersed after they went bankrupt about 10 years ago.

My pleasure. I have a book on the Québec Central somewhere in my office, but it eludes me at the moment

I finally found the book, "Quebec Central Railway" by Derek Booth. The QCR picked up 1300, 1302 and 1305, all FP7s.

Do you happen to know what the final fate of #1300 is? I ask because many years ago that engine was CP Rail #4070... the lead engine in the movie Silver Streak.

As far as I know, it is still sitting on a siding on the QCR. Built as FP7A 4070 by GMD in 1952, it was renumbered to 1426 (12/1954), and then renumbered again back to 4070 (1/1966). Briefly lettered for the fictional railway "AmRoad" in the Silver Streak in 1976 (great movie btw, I loved the used E-type Jag Pryor picks up!), it was sold to the Commission de Transport de la Communaute Urbaine de Montreal in 1982, became CTCUM #4070, then renumbered to #1300, then to Agence de Metropolitaine de Transport (Montreal) as their number 1300. It was sold to to the Quebec Central Railway in April 2003, but I don't think they ever ran it. The link in my response below is the latest info I have on it.

I plan on it. Currently of the thirteen cars I'm going to use for the train, I've got four in hand. The other 9 are on order along with the locomotives. I am basing my Silver Streak on a true Canadian consist. Therefore, I will be making an A-B-A set for my version. I've got the movie on DVD too.

I bought some used Kato California Zephyr cars, including a couple domes, to paint up as the D&H cars leased from CP during the early Amtrak years, a time when the Montrealer was being pulled by PA4s and passing by shark-nosed RF16s hauling freight...

Ah, you're doing an N gauge version. Shame you don't do HO. Rapido trains is releasing a series of CP Rail based mid-train Skyline Dome Cars later this year. Aside from the CP Rail Action Red and Canadian Pacific Maroon schemes, a Delaware & Hudson version will be released too. I think one of those mid-train Skyline Domes would look great behind some PA4s.
I've got a 14 car set of CZ coaches from BLI myself. However, mine are going to stay as is because my aunt was a "Zephyrette" on the CZ from 1964 to 1970.

I like N scale for the ability to run 50+ car trains, and the selection has certainly gotten better, but HO still has the market share. Kato does some gorgeous passenger cars in N scale; although they may not have the details of the Rapido cars, at less than 1/2 the price I don't feel as nervous repainting them
My wife's uncle used to own a short-line, and I have several box-cars painted for it, so I fully understand

I'm a member of a local model railroad club not far from here and we have both HO and N gauge modular layouts. I agree that N gauge has gotten way better over the last 15 to 20 years and if I was just starting off in this hobby, I might be tempted to do N gauge instead of HO. But alas, I have been doing HO now for almost as long as I've been alive, so I think I'll stick with that. I have seen those Kato California Zephyr and Super Chief sets before though. Very beautiful.

I started a response about how I got into N scale (it involves a Triumph Spitfire and an old HP computer), and I realized that I've written a similar story about a dozen times or so, so I think I'm going to write a post and just give you the link
Stay tuned!

Unfortunately the book was published in 2006 and the Québec Central ceased operations (for the second time) that same year. The track now belongs to the Ministère des Transports du Québec, but there's no mention of what happened to those F-units, although I did find this image: www.railpictures.net/viewphoto… which seems to tell us that they're still there as of last spring.

Found this on RailPictures site about 1306: "This locomotive is not owned by the Ohio Railway Museum, but it is in fact undergoing restoration by Silcott Railway Equipment Ltd." Zach Saulig Shop Foreman Ohio Railway Museum
I assume the same is true for 1304, possibly an A-A lashup for a tourist train?

Could be, but I'm not sure why the shop foreman would deny it unless they are being fully financed by an individual who plans on donating them and doesn't want it known (like whatzizname, the guy who owns the two ex-D&H RF16)s. Weird.

I would like to see the RF16s back in operation on the Saratoga and North Creek in New York. They operate a stretch of ex-DH trackage.

Actually I'd like to see them back in operation period, but it seems both of them require components that would need to be custom manufactured (one needs a main crank if I recall correctly). IMHO, it would be preferable to get them running with an Alco 251 engine than to sit there rotting, but hey, that's my just opinion.

AMT #1300 would be one worth saving if it's still around. I know it was in service until 1997 and then it sat derelict until 2011, last I heard. After that I do not know. About 40 years ago AMT #1300 had a different paint scheme... Canadian Pacific (CPRail) #4070! That's right. It's the lead engine from the train in the movie Silver Streak!
