Description
Mermaid of the Reef, a redraw of an early picture from 2006. Man, I can't believe that was over ten years ago...I've been going through old drawings and redoing 1 old piece from each year I've been on Deviantart. Ideally I am trying to pick the WORST drawing from each year, as a way of seeing how far I have (or haven't) grown as an artist. For this one I updated the color scheme on the character to fit the background better and changed her pose so that it doesn't look like her spine is snapping in half. Comments and critiques welcome and encouraged!

the character is very cute against it, although she doesn't really fit with her strong outline against that soft painterly background

I do that on purpose to give it a "cell shaded" look. like classic disney

I'm not saying how she's shaded looks bad, I just don't think she fits the background. I know disney also did that kind of thing, but i think the styles were a little more harmonious

hmm I see what you mean. The thick line is a hallmark of my work but I may have gone a few pixels too thick here. Should maybe go closer to my Fantasia Centaur next time...
