I'm doing one big villain redesign for each of the big three of dc heroes. so for batman, we have Bane.
Why Bane?... Well because as far as enemies go... he alone is both Bruce's match and antithesis in equal parts.

When you look at intelligence, skill, strength and cunning... Bane is right there. Physically he is a match for Bruce, mentally he is a challenge and philosophically... he is the dark side to the coin of what criminals have wrought...

Bane grew up in prison. He is who he is because of where he is from... I could go all day on the reasons here but it would pay off much more to just read the guys origins...

Basically what I thought a lot about in the design IS where Bane comes from. In prison, your story is written on your skin. Your tattoos tell who you are, what you've done, who you belong to etc... This is going to differ from prison to prison but it remains a theme that I found suiting. Culturally we look at where Bane grew up and we can get an idea of what he might have found most vital...

for most people the big departure here as a design is the choice to remove the fabric mask and cover his face in ink that mimics the shapes found in the luchador inspired concealment he is traditionally depicted with... again I point to his origins... Face tattoos have an entirely different meaning on the inside than they do to the rest of the world... and in a fictional prison found in a fictional country I could really get creative with every meaning that I wanted to convey here but the simple premise is this. Bane is top of the yard. He's a badass of the first degree. He earned his way up and he wears it as clear as day where everyone can see it.

with those elements in place, I wasn't going to complicate the costume itself. It's simple. Bane wears whatever he wants to wear... He just has to have his venom.

I didn't even complicate that. Its a belt with some vials and a dial hooked up to injection lines which are held in place by sub-dermal implants screwed directly into the bone... (yes, he is mainlining venom straight into the marrow at this point rather than the veins)

My venom isn't changing from a hundred pound weakling into a behemoth because of an injection. He isn't the Hulk. He isn't Dr. Jekyll... He's a hardcore fighter who built his mass by pumping iron in the yard. The venom makes him impervious to pain, it heightens his alertness and it acts as a synthetic adrenaline but at the end of the day it is a drug, not a magic serum... and he is dependent on it.
His one point of vanity is also a weakness... the prolonged use of venom has burst so many blood vessels in his eyes that not only has the white become red but he can barely stand direct light to hit them without a filtration... so he always wears some type of red tinted glasses or goggles.
