Intel Database: Shadow Beasts - Enemy of Mankind

On March ██th 20██, at 7pm, humanity was greeted by a threat we were woefully unprepared for. Emerging from a portal within the coastal city of Eastpoint, Maine, the massive, black creature that appeared from within it was known as a Shadow Beast.

Also known as 'The Walking Darkness', these extradimensional beings live only to cause chaos, and are the very reason UNITE is fighting this secret war. But despite years of cumulative research, our knowledge on their species still remains minimal. What are they? Why are they here? And where do they come from? These are questions that have baffled the best researchers in the field for years. While there are no concrete answers for these questions, there is some delicious information we know about their kind. Perhaps it may aid you on your career within UNITE~

Origin and First Contact

As mentioned earlier, the first Shadow Beast ever documented was responsible for the attack on Eastpoint, Maine. Before the formation of UNITE, the creature (which at the time was believed to be the only one of its kind) was simply, and crudely, referred to as an Extradimensional Anomaly (EXA for short). From then on it would be given the designation of EXA-01; the first ever Shadow Beast to be recorded in the UNITE data hub.

Eyewitnesses to the carnage mentioned EXA-01 appearing from a large portal which resembled a large crack in the sky, appearing above the center of the city. The size of these interdimensional portals are directly proportional to the creature that emerges from it and also has an additional effect of generating an electromagnetic burst upon first manifesting in realspace. It is generally known that the bigger the Shadow Beast, the larger the portal it emerges from, which in turn, creates an EMP burst radius which scales accordingly. The EMP burst from the Eastpoint attack had an approximate radius of over 280 square miles, essentially severing all means of contact for the city to the rest of the world. As a result of this, help arrived too late for the victims and the city sustained a death toll well over the tens of thousands.

EXA-01's destructive rampage would go on unhindered until another Shadow Beast appeared to challenge it's dominance. This Shadow Beast would be none other than our star attraction, EXA-02, and given the apt codename of Black Star. The clash between these two immense powers would eventually result in 02’s victory.

02 would disappear shortly after defeating 01, and would go on to appear many more times during future Shadow Beasts incursions. While I find this to be a rather sweet gesture, It is still uncertain if 02 is acting out of compassion, or simply the need to dispatch a potential rival to its new domain. But regardless, its timely intervention during that first attack prevented EXA-01 from spreading further destruction to neighbouring cities.

In the aftermath of the attack, the US government made the classic move to cover up the incident. The reason? The city was located above a deep magma chamber, and the tectonic plate movement caused it to collapse. It was thought to have been an isolated case. A freak of nature.. However, three months later, another Shadow Beast attacked a city in Texas, followed by yet another one in Iowa just a mere five months after the previous. It became clear that these attacks were never going to stop. These battles between EXA-02 and later Shadow Beasts would always result in some form of collateral. The need to prevent unnecessary colateral from these battles became apparent, and from within that year, UNITE was formed with its continuous mission to defeat the Shadow Beast once and for all.

Species and Classification

And this, my dears, brings us up to speed on the current state of affairs. But what are these curious creatures, really?

Unfortunately this is where the scientific community is at its most divided. Despite seemingly having its own biological classification, Shadow Beasts aren't exactly a species, or even a genus. This is because the form one Shadow Beast takes drastically differs from another. In fact, no two Shadow Beasts share the same outward design.

What’s interesting to note is that every Shadow Beast plays into some known type of fear an individual may have. This is further exacerbated by Shadow Beasts with hybrid designs that stem from multiple fears. In some cases, their appearance follows no logical rhyme or reason with some being a mish-mash of animals and/or objects, while others have appearances that are designed purely to strike carnal fear in its target. So far we have discovered a shark that walks on insect legs and spews acid, a one-eyed blob with countless human arms, and my personal favorite, a floating corpse with injection syringes for hands and its entrails hanging out. I could go on with a long list of possible combinations pertaining to documented phobias, but to keep things simple, if you can imagine it, then it probably exists.

Physical and Biological Structure

That being said, how do we know they are all related despite their drastic difference in appearance? How do we decide if an EXA is a Shadow Beast and not, say, a Mythic? Thankfully we have managed to note some consistencies in their biology which reflect across their species regardless of size or appearance.

To start with, all Shadow Beasts have bodies composed of Anti-mana. This black substance is believed to be an isotope of regular mana and forms the bulk of their bodies, presumably serving as an energy source for their abilities. How this anti-mana is formed remains a mystery, but is generally believed to be created from the creature’s core.

This anti-mana body is then held together by an electromagnetic field generated by the Shadow Beast Core. The core is the most identifiable part of a Shadow Beast due to it resembling a spherical colored gem and usually resides at the center of the beast; relaying information through and from its body. In a way, it functions as both a heart and a brain; giving the creature life whilst also dictating what form, power, and nature the creature will possess.

The color of the core varies from one of eight known colors and gives the Shadow Beasts it's secondary accent color. The only way to 'kill' a Shadow Beasts is to destroy its core. However at present, it seems like the only way the core can be destroyed is by the hands of EXA-02. Aside from the core, a Shadow Beast has no other discernible internal organs. We know this for a fact since their anti-mana corpses decompose rapidly, leaving nothing behind except for trace amounts of mana. Which is a real pity as I would love to see what really makes them tick.

This does beg the question on how some Shadow Beasts with mouths are able to consume food without a stomach, or even vocalize sounds without lungs. While their inner biology is still relatively unknown, their outer physiology has been extensively documented from first-hand encounters by our forces on the field. It has been noted that their body structure commonly displays one of three properties:

1) Solid

The most common type of Shadow Beast out there. A Shadow Beast with this type of body is nearly everything-proof. Conventional projectiles will simply ricochet off harmlessly. Such Shadow Beasts rely on raw power and physical strength to inflict damage. Their sturdy body structure allows them to sometimes manifest as large Titan Shadow Beasts. The largest Titan Shadow Beast ever recorded was at a whopping height of 238 meters tall.

The easiest way to stop a solid-type Shadow Beast is to weaken the electromagnetic field which gives the anti-mana surrounding its body it's distinctive shape. This means that they are vulnerable to extremely high temperatures, which will require heat-based weapons. Thankfully our advancements in handheld laser weapons have made dealing with such Shadow Beast a much easier task. But as the technology is still in its experimental phase, Enforcers are often advised to rely on fire charges from their XM-7 Quantum to engage such Shadow Beast (unless it's a Titan).

2) Liquid

As the name implies, such a liquid-type Shadow Beast has an amorphous form capable of changing shape on the fly. These types of Shadow Beast are more dangerous than their solid counterparts as the extent of their bodies can be altered to fit the situation they are in. They can create makeshift weapons out of their anatomy, as well as having a much higher tolerance to damage, in some cases, capable of regenerating over damaged areas. Physical weapons are simply absorbed into their body without any resistance, and can sometimes contribute to the growth of the creature. Such Shadow Beasts are also smarter and rely on their agility and tactics to overwhelm a foe.

Due to their cores possessing a weaker electromagnetic field, liquid-types cannot reach colossal sizes unlike to their solid-type brethren; with the largest liquid-type ever recorded being as big as a double decker bus. This also means that their bodies do not react as adversely to heat based weaponry. Because of this, cryogenic weapons such as water-charged Quantum are often recommended to prevent the Shadow Beast from regenerating.

3) Spectral

The last, and perhaps most elusive of Shadow Beast are the spectral types. These types of Shadow Beast aren't usually that big, but have proven to be just as equally deadly despite their size. As their name suggests, what makes them stand out is the state which their anti-mana bodies exist in. Spectral-type Shadow Beasts are almost gaseous in nature and have the ability to phase through solid matter. This means that both conventional, and energy weapons have no effect on them. You'd think having such a body would make their cores the most vulnerable of the three types, but the reality is that their cores exist in a phantom state that is veiled by this spectral anti-mana.

As with other Shadow Beast types, it's anti-mana body must be destabilized before the core can be exposed. From our tests it seems like high voltage electrical damage is capable of penetrating its ethereal form, and exposing its core.

Powers and Abilities

Much like their appearance, the powers a Shadow Beast can possess also vary wildly from creature to creature. Some of them have abilities that align with the color of their cores, such as an orange core giving the creature pyrokinetics, or a cyan core Shadow Beast having cryokinetical abilities. At times their abilities are also tied to the physical traits they possess. Winged Shadow Beasts are, obviously, able to fly. While those with more aquatic traits are only encountered in large bodies of water.

But because they are Shadow Beasts, some aspect of their abilities, much like their biology, has been shown to defy logic as well. Some Shadow Beasts without wings have been known to levitate without any form of visible propulsion, while others can manifest physical or energy-based weapons from out of nowhere. All these variables put together have cemented the Shadow Beasts as some of the most dangerous kinds of EXA out there because of their sheer unpredictability.

Hypothesis

With all this is mind, what is a Shadow Beast truly supposed to be? There are many theories pertaining to their existence. But the two most highly regarded are as follows:

1) The Shadow Beasts are weapons.

The first, and most prevalent theory, is that the Shadow Beasts are weapons created by a yet to be identified race which are designed specifically to target the human race. This would explain why they are built around the many known fears of mankind.

We’ve established earlier that the forms they take are seemingly random. However, most of these design traits are based on objects, creatures, or entities from our planet. How would beings from another world garner such knowledge on our world unless they were already observing us to begin with? What lends further credence to this theory is the existence of EXA-02, which scientists believe to be a rogue weapon perhaps sent by an opposing force from their world to stop a potential invasion from occurring.

The only flaw with this theory is that unlike conventional weapons, the Shadow Beasts seem to attack all targets at random. Sure, they are known to attack local population centers, but for the most part they are not keen on targeting military infrastructure; which you would think would be the first, and most obvious choice for an invasion force. If anything, their behavior seems more akin to a wild animal searching for its quarry. If they are indeed looking for something, then we have no clue at this point what it may be.

2) The Shadow Beasts are manifestations of fear brought to life.

The second theory is that the Shadow Beasts are like wild creatures which exist in a dimension parallel to our own. Whenever an individual expresses a strong emotion such as fear, that fear (or fears) manifests as a reflection in their dimension and forms into an entity of its own.

If that's the case, then why are they appearing now of all times? I believe this could be the result of overpopulation on our planet. As we continue to expand as a species, the number of individuals with certain fears increases in proportion. It is possible that the sheer number of fears projected into this ‘shadow dimension’ eventually led to an outbreak of Shadow Beasts in their world, and in turn, caused them to spill over into our world. This could probably explain why their bodies are made of anti-mana. Since mana is a product of beings from our dimension, then it would make sense for the beings of an alternate dimension of Earth to have their own mana type that is similar, yet unique.

Given that there are beings in our own world which have been shown to be able to travel between different planes of existence, it's not a stretch to assume that one of these Shadow Beats may have garnered the power to do the exact same, but on a much larger scale. Of course, we will never know for sure unless we somehow manage to travel to their world.

Additional Information/Trivia

While rare, Shadow Beasts that have been previously defeated have been shown to reappear again on a much later date, which has caused many to lean towards the first theory above.
Because their bodies are made of Anti-mana, this makes it easy to track their movements thanks to the unique energy reading their bodies give off. Equipment such as the Mobile Sensor Array and the Electromagnetic Region Imaging Spectrograph (ERIS) satellite system have made early warning and tracking of Shadow Beast movement much easier.
Little is known about the Shadow Beasts prior to their first attack in the 20th century. Archaeological dig sites from across the globe spanning many different cultures often speak of creatures of pure darkness which has formed the basis of many myths and legends. Whether or not these were Shadow Beasts from their time or not remains a mystery.

Conclusion

With new, and more powerful Shadow Beasts appearing every other week, it would seem like humanity is on the losing end of this war. But as formidable as they are, their lack of foresight against us means that we can adapt and overcome them.

We cannot forever rely on entities such as EXA-02 to fight our wars. Which is why the best minds of UNTD are working around the clock to develop new weapons and equipment which will allow our forces on the field to counter Shadow Beast incursions more effectively. Advancements in early warning detections systems have enabled us to mobilize our forces quicker, as well as evacuate population sectors rapidly with minimal casualties.

In time, we will be able to deal with this threat on our own, and possibly with EXA-02 as well. But until that day presents itself, this is a war we cannot reveal to the world.

Don't worry, TNH is not dead, despite the lack of activity from BRSstarJV. I've been in contact with her the past month or so, and she has been very busy with IRL obligations, but thankfully still surviving. Hopefully we'll see her come back to the art scene eventually. Until then, I'll be helping to hold the fort.

Anyway, this shadow beast entry was quite a doozy to write. Probably the most comprehensive one I've done up to this point with the help of Jstar. Hopefully it covers a great deal on the science of their species (if anyone actually reads it lol). Of course you would recognize these shadow beasts from one of Jstar's earlier works , albeit with some slight tweaks done to their designs.

Which is why the best minds of UNTD are working around the clock to develop new weapons and equipment which will allow our forces on the field to counter Shadow Beast incursions more effectively. Advancements in early warning detections systems have enabled us to mobilize our forces quicker, as well as evacuate population sectors rapidly with minimal casualties.

In time, we will be able to deal with this threat on our own, and possibly with EXA-02 as well. But until that day presents itself, this is a war we cannot reveal to the world.

That's right, a new data hub entry after all this time! lol

Don't worry, TNH is not dead, despite the lack of activity from BRSstarJV. I've been in contact with her the past month or so, and she has been very busy with IRL obligations, but thankfully still surviving. Hopefully we'll see her come back to the art scene eventually. Until then, I'll be helping to hold the fort.

Anyway, this shadow beast entry was quite a doozy to write. Probably the most comprehensive one I've done up to this point with the help of Jstar. Hopefully it covers a great deal on the science of their species (if anyone actually reads it lol). Of course you would recognize these shadow beasts from one of Jstar's earlier works , albeit with some slight tweaks done to their designs.
