Description 4e D&D; Players Handbook - Chapter 1
Acrylics on board, approx 50cm x 40cm
Β© Wizards of the Coast. 4e Players handbook; Interior Illustration.

Original artwork SOLD

The adventurers cautiously explore amongst the ruins. One of them signals that they have found what looks like an underground entrance, but at that moment a sound in the wood startles not just the wildlife...

There is a lot to focus on in this piece. By facing the figures the same way, and by trying to create a flow of lines with the weaponry, I was aiming to pull the viewers eye across the page towards the entrance and wildlife. The low POV hopefully also adds to the tension of the scene.

So much work and so many details. The balance of the colours are lovely yet intense. I really love the way you have created the darker plants at the bottom but kept that rich intensity in the colours. The slanted angle and the low point of view really make it an interesting piece to look at and explore. The lighting all over feels magical and is wonderfully placed. I really love this piece.

Nether83 [2008-06-09 06:16:58 +0000 UTC]

I like the tilted perspective of the scene. All the character's weaponry seems to be aligned to pull the eye to the entrance except for the dwarf. I'm not quite sure where to look in the picture.

Nonetheless, there are some amazing details and colors in the picture.

RalphHorsley In reply to Nether83 [2008-06-09 08:36:02 +0000 UTC]

I didn't want one single focal point, it does have a deliberately ocmplictaed narrative.

Thank you

Well it is a very well done piece! and the perspective is great! gives exactly the feeling you wanted.
I just think the bird is too much tho.. keeps interest there where we should've seen the cave's entry better.
A part from that good colour choices and diversityshades! Gotta love the little details!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RalphHorsley In reply to doggerman [2008-06-09 08:38:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I wanted the bird to add a point of counter tension to the general flow, and to say - 'something spooked me', so the viewer can ask 'what?'.
