'Despite their fearsome reputation it is a rare traveller who is rewarded with a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.'
I have been wanting to do more landscape studies, and also personal projects, in this picture I managed to realise both ambitions.
The waterfall created a perfect framing device against which to set the silhouette of the Dragon. The Recession into shadows and looser marks help to frame the focal point. plus I really enjoyed painting that water - getting all energetic with my mark making, and enjoying using a couple of different gels. The 'slow-dri blending gel 'enabled the soft glaze of the mistiness, whilst a 'Gloss heavy gel' was used throughout for blending, and in larger quantity for a more impasto effect.
I was inspired by a photograph taken by WVDolphin [link] who takes the coolest waterfall pictures.

This is amazing -- your technical skills are very strong and you attention to detail is fabulous. The balance is just right as well. Love the richness of the rocks.

Hah, if you hadn't said it was a painting I could have sworn you've found evidence that dragons exist and took a photgraph of it. Very natural looking.

It really is quite peaceful and dynamic at the same time. Perhaps, if the dragon looked just a bit more startled, it'd be even more awesome, though that may just be my quirk or whatnot.
Be that as it may, the water is just fascinating.

Very cool, I'm always impressed when people can handle foliage and water with acrylics this well. They dry so damn fast, makes it hard to blend and work things sometimes.

Thanks. That's why I have been enjoying the gels, and stay-wet palette. They really extend those drying times.

Yeah, I've used the gels myself, they're great, but they don't play nice with all the pigments. Sometimes you want to extend the dry time, and it ends up making an opaque paint translucent, haha.
