'Despite their fearsome reputation it is a rare traveller who is rewarded with a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.'
I have been wanting to do more landscape studies, and also personal projects, in this picture I managed to realise both ambitions.
The waterfall created a perfect framing device against which to set the silhouette of the Dragon. The Recession into shadows and looser marks help to frame the focal point. plus I really enjoyed painting that water - getting all energetic with my mark making, and enjoying using a couple of different gels. The 'slow-dri blending gel 'enabled the soft glaze of the mistiness, whilst a 'Gloss heavy gel' was used throughout for blending, and in larger quantity for a more impasto effect.
I was inspired by a photograph taken by WVDolphin [link] who takes the coolest waterfall pictures.

Stunning work, as always! I thought this was actually photograph in the smaller preview tab. The colors, highlights and shadows work together here to create a remarkable impression of depth.

I find the rocks fantastic they look so real, but the waterfall is showing up to much white when water goes over rocks it thins them out and allows the rocks to show through. but other than that it is brillant and its magnificent creatures but i will forgive you your spelling as you can't not be good at every thing lol.

Thanks for your comment. Whoops - just reread my text, talk about a failure to proofread, combined with v.poor typing skils

Not a problem, I understood it, great piece of art work, but did feel it could have done with a bit more work on the waterfall, but as i said you can;t be great at every thing well done and if you ever need any proof reading done free of charge of course I'll be most happy to help.

Wow, this is incredible, Ralph! Instantly recognizable as the falls I visit so often. It's really awesome to see them painted. Next time I am there, I won't be able to help but imagine the dragon peeking out from behind the rocks.
