Monk in the UnderdarkPlayers Handbook 3 chapter start artwork; Dungeons & Dragons. Β©Wizards of the Coast

The Kuo-Toa were no match for the Monk and her Psionic companion, but the Aboleth rising from the depths might be another matter...
I always enjoy painting fight scenes with multiple figures, and showing the monk and her psionic companion kicking ass was great fun. Typically though I like to throw in a cliffhanger, will-they-wont-they, impending moment, and i think the beastie in the background does juts that.
To help provide focus on the figures I used the slanting light light, along with strong contrast between the saturated colour of the figures and the monochromatic desaturated environment.

Is that monster coming from the ground or out of water? I mean, I see the water coming out around it, but it's really hard to tell if it's a shallow area with rocks jutting out or if it's deep with rocks sticking out. You don't have to answer this if you think it's too stupid a question.

It is deliberately unclear, as it is emerging from deep shadow - but my guess would be water

Alright. Should I be terrified of bathing now? What if that thing just jumps up and eats me for breakfast? ...no, it'd be supper. I don't bathe during the day. *scatterbrained*

... just what the HECK is that thing coming from the water? Aboleth?!
Never heard of such a thing, but it looks bad for the companions.
Nice composition, stunning work as usually. Love the action and all the little details, can't praise you enough.

Holy cow, I freakin' LOVE Kuo-Toa! First the Grey Render and now Kuo-Toa? All you need to do is a Coffer Corpse and you'll pretty much have done all of my favorite monsters...
Great picture, by the way.

Impressive as ever, very clearly game orientated as befits a commission. I was wondering whether you get any time for more personal work, and what sort of thing you would do if so- whether it would still be action and drama-packed fantasy scenes or something else entirely.. (?).

Thanks.
II keep trying to make time for personal stuff, but then I get asked to do more cool work Oh, and it would be Fantasy.
