Description
Thousand ThronesWarhammer Fantasy Roleplay cover artwork.
Acrylic, approx 14" x 18"
Β© Black Industries, Games Workshop Ltd.
They had paraded for countless miles, yet still their cracked voices rang out in worshipful song.
This was a recently completed cover for the forthcoming WFRP supplement. I wanted to capture the classic grimy Warhammer feel, and mood.
I choose a palette that ranged form yellow to deep purpley-reds. I felt this was suitably atmospheric. Then to emphasis the focal point of the picture I put a green shade on the palanquin, and also centred the light source here, consequently becoming the lightest part of the picture.

Gawd!! It looks just like the local pilgrimage to the near church except with more skulls, banners and fanatici... ok, with more skulls and banners... ...
I'm not overly familiar with the warhammer world, but at first glance i took them for chaos followers with their gloomy and "wheatered" appearance... but after seeing the hammer banner (and the slight hint of the sedan holder's sign... ) i think i was wrong...
Dark looking and awesomely detailed, it has this "unclean zealots" feeling about it that makes it very atmospheric... a pleasure to look!

I think you understand Warhammer better than you think. You certainly seem to have sussed this one out
Thanks for the comment, glad you like the piece.

Zombies galore! I do love your zombies Ralph, they always look very zombieish... Good job, keep it up! (As if you couldn't!)

Typical Empire flagellant/pilgrim/religious nutters. That is why I love Warhamme, you can be completely OTT

Hah! Hmmm... I wonder why they're still following this religion, it doesn't seem to be doing wonders for their personal health really... They all look a complete mess!

You're right. I can't give too much away about the plot, but they are very 'dedicated'

Neat! I was hoping that you'd do some more Warhammer Fantasy covers. +fav!
May i ask in which forthcoming book this will be in? At first i thought: tome of salvation, but that's already out, is it not?

This will be the cover to 'The Thousand Thrones', a WFRP campaign book. It is already listed in the future product section of the Black Industries web site.
Thanks

I am really working for GW, and have for some years. I initially started working for them on Inferno! Prior to that I did a large amount of work on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay when it was published under license by Hogshead Publishing.

I work freelance. Via the internet these days, but I also occasionally travel down from Leeds to their HQ in Nottingham (where the design studio is too). It is only about 70 miles, so quite an easy journey.

So are they worshiping the dead? Why is the dead dude being carried around? 'Fraid I'm not that familiar with Warhammers lore. XD Looks totally kick ass though and completely creepy.

Ha Ha! sorry about the zombies, you know what? you should write a book, ther is a lot people like me would like to learn about your techniques, i think it would have a lot of sales. there are artist like fengh zhu, and Carlos Huante that makes books and dvds. I tell u that because I have a lot of questions I like to ask you, like how much time takes you to make a illustration like this? what we should consider when charging for an illustration... etc Thanx for your time my friend
