Perhaps my father would like to see this (as well as the episodes "Secrets and Pies" and "Horse Play"), as he thinks that telling little white lies is OK. (Although if I do show him these, would I run the risk of turning him into a brony? (Perhaps not, as he's big into fantasy series anyway.))

But seriously, though, there is some gray area. Although I do like the G4 series, comics, fanfics, etc., I can't really consider myself a member of the herd because I don't own anything from the toy franchise and I know almost nothing of G1-G3. I'm more into a different kind of "toy" and the earlier generations seem somewhat like they really WERE meant for little girls, unlike G4...

Hm, I don't know. I would personally consider the two comments to be effectively equivalent as they both tell her the same thing (Applebloom doing a lot of this inadequately) while also withholding information on just what is lacking. How Sugarcoat went about it couldΒ be different, but that doesn't mandate the should. If I were on the receiving end, and I also did not know Applejack (which would be the actual important difference in context if you ask me, that Applebloom is Applejack's sister), then I'd actually perceive AJ's comments as being patronizing, or being filled with platitudes... that is, sugarcoating the critique. Sugarcoat was decent enough to let me know in the stark beauty of brutal truths - she really doesn't like the picture. That's the part I always liked best about Sugarcoat. That I thought the picture was really nice on my own is and should be irrelevant. Although it is nice if Sugarcoat would be kind with her words, that niceness becomes a falsehood as soon as it is not backed up with actual intent to be kind, which Sugarcoat obviously doesn't have here. A false kindness is the some of the worst betrayals Sugarcoat would be able to inflict upon Applebloom, if you ask me.

Honesty is hard to grasp, and depends a lot on context and delivery. What works for one situation or person may not work in another, so it's important to take some time to evaluate everything.
Although I did imply in the titles of the two panels that there's a right and wrong way of being honest, both of the above examples are still valid and not necessarily incorrect. They're just different and interesting contrasts.
ThisΒ is part of the reason why the EQG Shadowbolts are fascinating to me. They're not opposites of the Mane 6, but rather reflections of them. The same characteristics presented in a different viewpoint, and when compared with the Mane 6 seem negative at first but is actually potentially more nuanced. It's a shame their characters aren't explored that much in the show.

Yes, I concur that they did not get enough time to shine in the Rainbow Rocks movie - but I think that would be more of a limitation of working with a feature-length movie in tandem with a setting that really calls for a serialized format. I reallyΒ liked the visual look of Lemon Zest, which is another reason I found the lack of depth disheartening.
This art, and this conversation to a good degree, fills me with inspiration to draw some more Shadowbolts. I haven't really explored Lemon Zest as much as I wanted to, and the rest of the group could also do with some character studies. They are a lot more relatable to me personally, as the "typical" American High School culture of Canterlot High is rather alien, while the stuffed air of a prep school reminds me a lot of Korean high schools that I am used to. While it would be rare to find someone like the Mane Six or the rest of the Canterlot High students among the students who have been in school with me, I can find plenty of examples who are like the Shadowbolts.

I can relate to that very much. Heck, I think I drew more stuff on June 2018 than I did for the years 2016 and 2017 combined, due to burning all my free time in other stuff that didn't leave a lot of traces outside my memory. I guess in a way my increased activity lately makes up for that. Anyways, onwards to Shadowbolt art!
