As opposed to light and dark, this tiny tip is about painting several lightsources. It's quite simple when done in an orderly fashion, and can add a lot to a painting.

Thank you for the tutorial! And again...it's all about planes and light... one additional question on the topic: how much shadow is "too much" shadow?

You're welcome.

I don't think there is such a thing as too much shadow. As a visual artist, you need to show what your point is - as soon as that is done, there's enough light, I'd say. Long-time professionals dislike the entirely black shadows beginning artists use when they don't know what to put there. So, that might be "too much shadow".

Amount of light and harshness of shadows have, however, a strong influence on the overall impression of a piece. It's often tempting in digital art to use very deep and many shadows, thus drowning out most detail. It's a quick way to create a picture, but it will be more interesting when the shadows aren't black.
Does this answer your question?

Yes it does, thank you very much for taking the time to answer!
I always wondered why colored shadows and black shadows co-exist and both look right.

It's more hurtful to use black to darken tones that shouldn't get the grey tint it creates. Traditionally, one would use, say, raw umber to darken a colour. I alwas found that using traditional mixing methods create better colours, which is why I like Painter so much.
