Description
If you've read my Journal, it's evident I'm kinda of obsessed with The Hunger Games. (This Author's Note is going to be pretty long.) Anywho, I've had this particular obsession for quite awhile now: Where the heck is each district supposed to be???The Light Blue = Ocean / Sea / Water
The Dark Blue = Land Mass
The Green = Districts
The Red = The Two Power Struggles
*If you full view, you'll be able to read the states' names a lot easier... (And sorry for the size, I didn't bother re-sizing it. Just merging all the dang layers froze Gimp for me several times. Once I finally got the layers to merge, I just saved. My PC needs a break >.<)
So, after finishing the trilogy and doing a bit of research on the novels (I was going to do the United States geography and shiz too but... there are 50 f'in states so, yeah, I kind of said 'no'), I've gotten something!
The main difficulty of this was:
A) Trying to match up with the book fairly well (since it's at least 100 years later, so the US is bound to have either expanded/decreased in actual size and the author really only told where four of the districts were at and gave big hints as to where 3 of the others were at and the rest were kind of up in the air)
B) Finding alternatives for districts (cause I had conflicted feelings of whether or not 6 or 11 should be in Georgia... and well... not putting most of the districts in Southern US)
C) Figuring out what each state/sector of the US is better suited for (since each district has it's own specialized industry... so yeah, it got pretty difficult)
D) "Spiraling" out the districts so that they go in a logical order from the Capitol (I'm pretty sure they mentioned something like this in the trilogy, and Katniss/Peeta wouldn't have gone on their Victory Tour in a complete zigzag and back tracking if they visited each district in order)
E) Making the district sizes somewhat proportional to population and leaving out room for wild lands and the arena for the Hunger Games (and this is after I figure out where I want the new ocean/sea/water levels to be at >.>'')
Side Note: Seeing as how some of the district's actual industry was unknown... I kinda of used an RP site I'm on to give me something to work with.
Known. Hinted At Popular Belief / Guessed / RP Site
The Capitol : Located in the Rocky Mountains
D 1 : Luxury Goods Production / A Career Tribute District
D 2 : New Nuclear Development / Cover as Granite Mine Industry / Located in the Rocky Mountains. / First Line of Defense for Capitol / Central Mountain Named "The Nut" / Origins of Most Peacekeepers / Loyalty to the Capitol / A Career Tribute District
D 3 : Technology/Electronics
D 4 : Fishing Industry / Located by the Sea/Ocean / Only District Remotely Close to a Sea/Ocean / Has Most Decent Looking People / A Career Tribute District
D 5 : Oil Refinery Industry/Small Scale Ranching/Breeding / Red Haired/Slim-Faced People
D 6 : Medical Based Industry / Has Boundaries Within A 2 Day's Walk to D 12
D 7 : Forestry/Lumber Based Industry / Located in area w/ Tall Trees / Some kind of dam in the area
D 8 : Textiles Industry
D 9 : Raw Materials Storage/Plastics Industry/Small Scale Hunters
D 10 : Livestock Based Industry
D 11 : Agriculture Based Industry / Located South of D 12 / Pretty Warm Climate, Even During Winter
D 12 : Coal Mine Industry / Located in Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina / Extremely Small / Mostly Surrounded by Wild Lands for Several Miles
D 13 : Nuclear Development / Cover as Graphite Mine Located Around DC District (aka Washington DC) / Inherited & Expanded Upon Underground Bunkers
:/ So yeah... it was difficult to take all of that and put onto a US Map >.>'' Very hard.
I wanted to make D4 somewhere around CA because of the oceans there and usually (for me at any rate) when you hear 'beautiful people' you kind of jump to CA 'cause of all the actors and what not living there >.>'', but the districts are all general East of the Capitol...
I wanted to make D6 somewhere around Georgia because of it's medical industry that was hinted at, and the Disease Control Center is in... Georgia! That and placing it there made it reasonable that 1 adult and 1 injured child could walk through the wild lands to D 12 in two days. But D11 is supposed to be directly south of D12 (which is around the NC area supposedly)...
I wanted to make D 7 somewhere around the Oregon/Washington State area since that's the only section of the US that has large, towering trees, and would be the least likely to have such high trees at least 100 years from now, but again, no districts West of the Capitol, and the Districts need to flow together reasonably well...
I wanted to make D 13 directly on top of where Washington DC was... but 100 years from now it's likely that it's under water, seeing as how close it is to the shoreline and rivers... (on the map at any rate)
:/ Those were my main, big problems when it came to each individual district.
In the end, I decided on this particular set up because I thought:
The Capitol & where the Arena Lands are set up there since it does say the Capitol is in the Rocky Mountains, and I figured that if the other districts are East of it, they'd be near the top or something so that if the Districts ever rise up against them and they're losing, they can always flee North into Canada (oh wow, and I just realized Canada = Freedom for soooo many people, the Indians, the African American Slaves, people fleeing the country...). And that leaves the West kind of empty and full of various different terrains so... wa-la, Arena Land complete with a wide tract of open waters too.
D 1 to 3 seem like they'd be pretty close to the capitol seeing as 1 is luxury goods--something the Capitol thrives on, and I didn't really think they'd need to be in a special place to do that so I could put them just about anywhere; 2 is their first line of defense against the other districts in case of another rebellion--and they're really loyal to the Capitol and already stated to be in the Rocky Mountains too; 3 is where most of their technology/electronics come from--another staple in Capitol life, and I figured maybe they get their energy from windmills / water turbines / solar energy / etc. since apparently the Capitol makes use of solar energy (what with their solar powered Peacekeeper guns) so that area geographically looked suitable enough to me... (And I kept thinking the Dakotas = the Lakota, aka plains Indian tribe, aka wide spread of empty land void of trees and things that block out sunlight.)
From there, I figured 4, 5, 8, and 9 ought to be reasonable close to the capitol since they seem to love D 4's seafood, so I imagine the fresher it is the better, so I supposed that 100 years later, maybe the great lakes expand and the ocean waters move in on it too, making it bigger (as you can see with the dark green-black coloring); 8 is where most of their clothing comes from so it'd probably be reasonable near the Capitol too, I mean in the Capitol they're all about 'luxury' so... yeah asides from high-tech stuff and accessories, what else is a luxury? Expensive clothing... and food from the sea when you're not near the sea... As for 5 & 9, I went off the RP Site I'm on, where 5 is another source of energy through oil refineries, which I imagine would be reasonable close to the Capitol since electricity doesn't seem very common amongst the other districts (well, 12 in particular) and 9 is a storage house for raw materials that they can process into various things they might need as well as plastic/glass production--probably another staple for the Capitol since they do need something to keep all their precious food and stuff in...
With 7, I reasoned that it's not just a 'we cut down trees for paper' industry, but maybe more like 'forestry' so they wouldn't necessarily have to be in an area with huge, gigantic trees. They could cut down trees, but also raise trees...? I mean if they just cut down trees then eventually they'd run out of trees to cut down so... yeah... That and it is 100 years later at the least so... maybe the US decided to start planting trees in D 7 and a 100 years later they're all humongous... or we cutting what trees there are in D 7 and they've grown out to be that huge.
10 & 11 are where they are because... well... 11 needs huge tracts of land if they're the ones providing the rest of the food for the Capitol and Districts, and Katniss did say 11 was pretty big. 10 would need a fairly large tract of land too for all the livestock raise (in particular, cattle) and Texas is already known for that... so... yay easy fix there.
6 & 12 are where they're at since 6 needed to be near enough 12 so that people could walk there in 2 days and 12's supposed to around the Appalachian Mountains, but had to be lower than upper Virgina Area since 13's around there... and they're shooting the movie for The Hunger Games in NC anyway.
13's around the Virginia/Maryland/Pennsylvania Area since... that's where Washington DC is at and that's where they said 13's around anyway... I dunno know why people keep putting it waaay up where New York is... (well maybe I do, since, you know, it was where the US was first building the atom bomb and what not.... but still... the book said it's around the DC District where there are already bunkers and shiz there since it's where our Nation's capitol is and where the President resides and what not... and 13 DID say they pretty much inherited the place from their Ancestors (aka us) and just expanded upon it some).
And THAT is my long Author's Notes on the creation of this map. Feel free to comment as you like. If you guys wanna use this... I'm okay with it just... give me some credit or something? >.> It took me at least a week to come up with this, what with all the researching and finding a map I liked to begin with...

You got 12 kind of right. In the part of KY I live, it is District 12. I live in an old mining town. And where I grew up in PA had Three Mile Island and I am such a dork I google mapped the two locations and it is about a week's hike.

My house would be under water
also D 2 makes sense because the NORAD HQ is buried under a mountain in that area

So generations of isolation have caused certain districts to become unique in the phenotypical characteristics of those people who are deep rooted there? Interesting, must take place at least a couple of centuries from now, although it's never revealed what year it is going by the Gregorian calendar.

I'd be in District 4. Which is the best district ever. Annie, Mags, FINNICK. That officially makes this my favorite HG map.

So I'm either....12(Obviously, we have TONS of coal here and were completely surrounded by mountains. Coal was like our main export.) Or possibly 13. I live in Pennyslvania but noting from all the coal and the mountains I'm pretty sure I'm where 12 is said to be.

Honestly it could be both. I grew up in PA and I know Eastren PA would be good for 13 and Western good for 12. They said it was a week's hike to 13 from 12 and I think it would work.

o.O Pennsylvania has coal mines? Didn't know that. Interesting new tidbit of information for me. ^^'
Either way, I'm in 12. Not much to do here, in my opinion, but plenty of interesting-looking places to shoot movies I guess. I hope the movie turns out to be pretty decent at least. I can only pray for it to be as amazingly good as something like LotR--one of the few movies adapted from books (that I know) that follows the book pretty darn well.

Oh dozens of them. We have coal mines, coal museums, coal coal coal. EVERYWHERE.
Yeah. No movies ever get it right*Sigh* I've only read the Hobbit in LORT so far. Haven't seen the movies since...a heck of a long time ago.

o.o Wow, lotta coal.
And yep, no movies ever get it right now-a-days. >.>'' Like Eragon... and then IDK what happened to Twilight... and the Percy Jackson one was... well I haven't seen it myself but it's trailers... given that they got some appearances wrong... :/
Oh well, eventually they'll get it right again someday, won't they?

Oh yeah. Its everywhere. We have FIELD TRIPS to coal mines.
Twighlight, dear lord. PERCY JACKSON WAS A WRECK! I was ready to kill myself! The characters appearences were a disaster, the plot itself was altered so much I doubted the director even read the book!
Hopefully. If they could get Harry Potter right they can do it again...
