A thought on my AR-71 energy carbine. This is a more detailed redesign of the version I created in the 1990's.
The AR-71, in my story, began its development in the year 171 of the founding of the Central Galactic Alliance. It fires a laser-sheathed bolt of charged plasma so it would look somewhat like a "blaster" from Star Wars but would travel much faster. The "magazine" is a removable power cell.
It was purposefully designed to look similar in shape and function to the bullet-firing weapons it was replacing. Because it serves the role of a military "assault rifle", that is what the "AR" stands for in the designation.
In the real world that we live in today, "AR" stands for "Armalite Rifle" but it is commonly mistaken to be "assault rifle".
