Description Well it's been one hectic month! Admittedly June doesn't look much quieter! So this is practically the western equivalent of  [PREMADE] Equine Stable V [CLOSED] [FLAT PRICE] ! Big & Fancy Schmancy! I was really excited to do this as it's been a while since I've done a desert map and I really haven't done an exclusive western stable eaither! Also unlike other maps I've done - one barn (the first actually) has been specifically designed for use of other livestock other than horses (but it can also be used as an equine barn) In addition there are livestock holding pens incorporated into it's design for the western competitions that use livestock in them.  totally not in love with the cat with this map either nope I'd like to thank Google Maps & the Santa Fe Rodeo for letting me stare at your complexes for a ridiculously long amount of time to figure out how to do the different chutes and braces!

Just realized how skinny this map is compared to the others! OMG - ah well adds to it's uniqueness!

that... is... a LOT of stuff. we were trying to design fancy places for really rich characters and had no idea what to put there and it ended up being this really small quaint looking sort of country farm LOL. because we had no idea what a really huge expensive place would look like. it's so hard to imagine places this big with this much stuff.

ha, I love how you included the manure pile. now I said "what about the manure pile?" and they said "it's just pretend, who cares." psh!

anyway, some good ideas in this. very inspiring. we gotta go back and tackle our map project again.

also, that random free cat, lmao. x'D

ikr? i always love to see how many things I can stuff into a map! that's one of the things though that I love about large maps the possibilities are endless. i don't have to worry about my label count i can just keep adding stuff in. I've done a lot of these now and it is still a challenge for me to imagine the large complexes - I've spent wayyy too long staring at different complexes via google maps (and trolling dA to see what other people have done), and often times I still have trouble arranging things (or forgetting things) on them! What helps me is to make a list of everything I want to include before I start the map, or any defining features that require specific placement, and then I make an outline of all the structures so they're there and it's harder to forget them which I then spend what feels like endless hours throwing black boxes around a white canvas. lol.

manure piles are important. though admittedly on this one i almost forgot one (I try and get them in early for that reason)

good luck! feel free to send me a note or something if you'd like some help

every barn needs at least one cat that fails to catch mice, and reliably gets underfoot!

baw-haw, we WERE going to have an obligatory useless cat and I'd completely forgotten all about it until you said that just now, yipes! speaking of lists of things you don't want to forget!

we're trying to set a stable area among hills/forests and make it fit the landscape so that's hard, it's all three dimensional with stuff like, "this is technically close to that but it's on top of the hill so you can't see it from there because you're below it" and such. we're trying to make something that looks like a simple small little place when you first walk out there, but then you follow the road and oh there's another building, and hey there's something, and oh there's stuff up that hill, and so on. it imitates the owner of the property in the story who looks like just whatever on the outside but the more you get to know him the more hidden stuff there is.

we do everything on graph paper though so we keep running out of paper lol! we're like "okay one box = 1 foot" *immediately runs out of room* "okay, one box = 5 feet" *out of room again* "10 feet? okay 100 feet..." hahaha

Oooh a 3D map! Those are always pretty cool but a pain to make! Topography is a killer! Maybe try using contour lines?

I've had that problem before when making 'paper" maps - ugh. I think I lost a whole book of graph paper once to a map! Though now that I think about it I think I pretty much do the same thing - just in Photoshop. Oh 35 inches is a big enough canvas right? Wrong! Need more space! *proceeds to make the canvas size bigger*  Thank goodness for PSB files. I do scale them down pixel wise once I'm done but still. Scale just makes me want to curl up in a corner and weep.

exactly, exactly!! and then you start putting separate papers side by side and have them spread all over the floor! barn's in the bedroom, pasture's in the kitchen, and if it's digital you just keep extending the canvas a bit more, and then the computer starts lagging because you have a gigantic PS file open, lol

we try to do a multi-map zoom-in thing, "heres' the ENTIRE area, everything is dots" and then zoom in "okay this just the area around the barn" and then map 3, "this is the inside of the barn and where the individual stalls are."

and then there's MATH. you're all like "okay, here's X acres by X acres" -draws a box- and then later you're like, "pastures probably aren't perfectly square, let's make this more organic to fit the land..." and then here comes the calculators and Google searches for the area/perimeter of an irregular shape and oh good lord. -weeps with you-

One of my commissions ended having a file around 5.45 GB - and that's scaled down (aka not a 35 in. canvas anymore)! Both Photoshop AND my computer were having hissy-fits over it! (I was as well because of their hissyfits. It wasn't pretty.) It would be smaller if I would concede to getting rid of/merging layers. But what if I need to go back and edit/fix something?? I don't want to do it all again! (been there got that t-shirt)

I like the sound of the multi-zoom-in thing! I've seen maps like that before and they've turned out pretty good! Especially as it allows you to splerge on the detail but still fit everything in! I've considered doing actual inside layouts of barns, but everytime backed out because reasons. Time. Wanting to leave some things up to peoples imaginations. The level of detail that I would be required to put in to be satisfied.

REASONS WHY most of my pastures are squarish! I don't like having to do the math. The less math I do the happier I am. (Calculators are the best thing ever) That and the Photoshop Pen tool eludes me.

yeah if you're gonna make them for someone else, I'd just put a vague rectangle and let them do the specifics on what the buildings look like and what's in them, or get someone specialized in that. that's how it would work IRL I think. it's fun to look up the specifics for the stall design, what the latches look like, the fencing, all that stuff that will be in the background, you just go shopping online for hardware and pick out what you want but don't have to actually buy it and install it lol. buuuut also part of the background is "If character is facing this, what is behind them? what is to their left?" = maps = = "call me later when you guys are doing the latches and stuff again" xDD
