Percy’s new Bell

Safety on the Island of Sodor is very important, especially in the cold months of ice and snow. All engines, big and small care whistles and horns to sound off there presents.

It was late into the night, Percy was busy dropping off the mail, he was very happy to finish. He was so happy in fact, he blew his whistle so high and so loudly, that it shoot right off his firebox and landed in a field.

Percy trundled into the sheds, he was very sad. Toby looked over, “what’s wrong, Percy?” He asked, “you look glum.” Percy peeped, “I just lost me whistle, and they can’t find a replacement…” Toby looked a Percy and felt bad, then he got an idea.

“Here, Percy!” Toby said, “you can take one of my bells!” Toby’s driver went over and grabbed a bell from the workshop, these bells were specially made for engines, but the shop keeper didn’t know the bell was for an engine, other than Toby.

Percy looked at the bell, “I don’t know about this…” he stammered, but Toby insisted. The fitters attached the bell onto Percy. It felt rather peculiar. Percy thanked Toby, before setting off.

When Percy headed to the shunting yards, he was excited for a hard days work, but not for long. Percy ringed his bell and before he knew it, the trucks stayed to giggle. “Is that Percy’s new bell?” They questioned, “it look bulky and off!” Percy felt a bit embarrassed, he bumped the truck very hard. “Shut up!” Percy peeped, “my bell isn’t bulky and off!” And he quickly shunted the express coaches.

Later, Percy stunted the coaches to the platform at Knapford station. Gordon puffed up to Percy, Percy decided to give a nice right of his bell. “Ding ding ding!” He smiled, but Gordon huffed. “A bell? On a steam engine? Disgraceful!” Gordon shouted, Percy was puzzled. “But Toby wears a bell!” He said, “why can’t I?” Gordon explained “Toby is a tram engine, you’re a proper steam engine. And proper steam engines don’t wear bells…” Percy felt terrible, but he couldn’t stay for long. He had to take coal from coaling plant. So Percy trundled away.

When he got to the coaling plant, Percy blushed bright red in embarrassment, he could hear the others making fun of him and he didn’t like it. Especially the diesels. Arry and Bert were also taking coal, when they saw Percy. “Bell Percy?” Arry laughed, “what are you a tram engine?” Bert teased. Percy trundled away sadly, he hated his new bell, everyone was making fun of him for it.

Percy wanted to take the branch line, but was unable to. Snow had blocked the tracks and all the branch line engines had to take had to take the mainline instead. Percy puffed threw the countryside, he dinged his bell, he thought his bell was silly and off, but then something happened. As he ringed his bell, people started to wave at Percy and complementing his new bell. Children waved and cheered for Percy, and Percy ringed his bell back.

Percy puffed proudly down the line and felt very happy. Just then, Percy ran into Gordon. “Oh no, what happened here?” Percy peeped. Gordon was too embarrassed to say. “The tracks were Icy, and Gordon slipped off the tracks coming down from the hill, and what’s worse, there isn’t a phone line in sight to call for help!” The driver explained. Suddenly, they could hear James’ whistle. “Clear the line!” The driver shouted, Percy wanted to move, but suddenly got an idea.

Percy’s driver gathered all his strength and ringed Percy’s bell as hard as he could. “DING DING DING!” Percy cried. The noise was so loud that James puffed, “is that Toby?” He thought, James soon slowed to a halt and perverted a collision.

That night, Gordon puffed into the sheds, he felt very silly. “I’m sorry I made fun of you, Percy” Gordon sighed, Percy smiled. “Good news” said Toby, “the fitters said they can give you a new whistle, first thing tomorrow.”

Percy then looked down, and back at his bell. He ringed it again, hearing it’s chimes echo threw out the empty shed. “Tell them to put it on hold” Percy puffed, maybe I miss judged this bell…” “if that’s what you want?” Said a booming voice. “Oh sir!” Percy peeped. The Fat Controller smiled, “I will allow.”

Percy puffed proudly, “thank you, sir. Thank you!”
