Trials of Ukuni
By FOXCARROTS
Part Four
“The Genie.”
For weeks everyone and anyone tried to help Ukuni and Comet Kitsune. However the biggest fact of the matter as the glue would simply not budge. It was indestructible to any tool used to try and cut or break it and no solvent tried by Tanis or anyone else could do so much as blemish the glue. It was a true marvel and would be an interesting thing to behold by many if not for the simple fact that it was stuck to the soles of two women. Ukuni and Comet were faced with the issue that the glue was seemingly completely permanent and literally impossible to escape from. To make matters worse both were either a current or former monk and art of the rituals that made them part of the order came with a mystical power that made matters much worse. The minds and bodies of both women had been enhanced beyond normal mortals ands one interesting boon was that their feet were protected. The force that enhanced them worked to protect soles from damage, toes from breaking, and ankles from turning. It was like they wore safety shoes of celestial power that protected their feet. However, though it kept them from harm it very much did not protect them from glue. The stuff stuck to it as surely as any other surface and was attached to skin that could not rip or be easily cut. The force would literally not allow their feet to be hurt so any kind of surgery or amputation would likely cause complications or even death. The selfsame power that protected their feet was now intrinsically helping them stay stuck.
The builders of the lot at first did not know what to do. The ninjas that Ukuni was with simply left her behind. She was high ranking, and they all wanted her position. As she was stuck and could not come after them, they grew bold and moved onto their next occupation or scheme. Ukuni, struggled daily to follow them but the glue held secure and refused her even a single step. The hardened enforced permacrete that had been laid was linked to her feet and insisted she stay precisely put. She could not be chiselled free; she could not be made mobile. By all intents and purposes, Ukuni would never move again.
The order of monks that Comet belonged showed up soon to help. They knew they should apprehend Ukuni but realised no prison would hold her as securely as the glue under her perfect soles. They focused instead on Comet and doing what they could for her. They tried everything in their arsenal to set her free, but she was as rooted in place as anything they had ever seen. They could not set her free for even their wildest effort. They assured Comet that their best thinkers and highest-ranking problem solvers would not rest until they found a way to loosen the glue. However, in the mean time they would solve as much as they could. They bought the site and though they allowed the workers to continue they stipulated that the area around the two stuck girls was to be set aside to accommodate them. They would have a building built around them with a removeable cover and walls to protect them from the elements. Every manner of comfort was brought and shared with both women. Though Ukuni was their mortal enemy, they did not desire to let her suffer while she was trapped in eternal adhesive.
Though they had what was like a mini mansion around them with anything they could want, neither girl was happy. Even with all they were given it was hard to forget that their feet were immobile, that unless something was brought in reach, they could never claim it. All of the riches in the world, all of the exotic food would be instantly traded for even a single step from where they were trapped.
Weeks grew to months and time seemed to blend together. The monotony of the footprints they had to stand in grew nearly unbearable. Both women worked out constantly in any way they could. They both agreed that even though they could not move from the spot, they would not allow their bodies to atrophy. Most of the body could be trained by modified workouts and equipment that was given to them. The legs were a little harder to train as they could not even run-in place. This was solved rather easily by the simple act of trying to get out. Attempting to take even the smallest of steps strained all of their leg muscles and was like a perfect workout that no body would ever dare or ask for. Their bodies were in peak state, but their minds struggled. They wanted out and nothing could possible satiate that feeling short of actually getting out.
Eventually the passing days were interrupted as Tanis arrived back to the lot that held the two women. Comet looked at her with hope and even Ukuni’s face seemed to show an improvement.
“Please tell me you found a solvent to this crap!” Comet said in a hopeful tone.
“Solvent no.” Tanis responded. “There is no solvent to that stuff, believe me I have searched.”
“Then you are again wasting our time.” Ukuni snapped as she crossed her arms.
“Though I have not found any tool or solvent that can free you I decided to think outside the box.” Tanis explained. “If science can’t unstick you, perhaps magic can.”
“Magic?” Comet said with a perked eyebrow. “How exciting!”
“Sounds expensive.” Ukuni remarked. “How much will this magic cost.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that.” Tanis replied. “The monk order has said that they will reward me greatly if I set the pair of you free.”
“We might just have a chance.” Ukuni replied. “The only thing stronger than this glue appears to be your greed.”
“Ukuni be nice!” Comet scolded. “What magic are you going to try on us.”
“I have this!” Tanis replied as she pulled a lamp from her bag. “Inside this lamp is a powerful genie. If I unleash her from here, she will grant the bearer one wish. I will unleash her and wish for you to be free!”
“If you have a genie lamp with a wish, why haven’t you wished for riches?” Ukuni asked. “I find this a little fishy.”
“Whatever I wished for would be a one time boon.” Tanis replied with a smile. “Though if I free you, I will accept nothing less than payments for your freedom paid in perpetuity as long as you remain free.”
“That checks out.” Ukuni admitted. “Let’s unleash the genie and make that wish.”
Tanis smiled. “I have been looking forward to this!” She rubbed the lamp and immediately smoke came out, it was magenta and blue and as it billowed from the lamp it slowly formed into a humanoid shape. The smoke faded to reveal a beautiful woman clad in a tight metal corset and leggings the colours of the smoke that had unleashed her. She was thin and fit, with long violet hair tied in a ponytail on the top of her head. She wore gold hoop earrings and several bracelets on her arms and legs. She smiled as she looked around at what was going on.
“Lunabelle.” Ukuni replied with a serious tone. “Tanis you moron you have no idea what you have done.”
“She’s a genie, isn’t she?” Tanis asked. “Genie I am the one who have summoned you! I demand a wish and would like to wish for…”
As Tanis spoke, she had more and more trouble separating her lips, the top and bottom began to stick together. A strange green liquid began to form on her mouth. Tanis struggled to talk but the substance began to foam more and more. She clutched at it with her fingers but immediately they became stuck up with the goop that spread and spread the more she clawed at it and sealed her mouth tight. The goop seemed to have a mind of it’s own as it began to wrap around Tanis’ body. Comet instinctively tried to step forward to help but the glue made a loud stretching sound as it reminded her soles that they were tightly held to the spot. Tanis was being attacked by the ever-expanding goop and neither Ukuni nor Comet could take a single step toward her to help.
Tendrils of the goop shot out and started to stick to the walls and ceiling of the enclosure protecting the stuck girls. Soon Tanis was strung up in a web of goop, her feet lifted up off the floor. Lunabelle waked over and smiled as she leaned in, right into Tanis’ face. “I might be linked to a lamp and can only get out when someone interacts with it, but I am no genie.”
Tanis squirmed against her sticky bonds, but her arms were now tightly glued to her sides and her legs held together by bands of goop. She could only flail in her gooey bonds, the webbing holding her like a fly waiting to get eaten by a spider. She tied to talk, tried to plead, tried to beg for help.
“Squirm all you want dear.” Lunabelle grinned. “That is a wish you are stuck with. An army with swords couldn’t cut you out of that. Nothing can free you until I wish it off of you and after you treated me like a servant, I am not inclined to do. This is what you get for assuming I am just some simple genie.”
“You are a sorcerer that messed with powers you should not have messed with.” Ukuni replied. “I have read about you.”
“Too true I am afraid.” Lunabelle said as she turned on her heel to face the trapped girls. “Though I have the ability to grant wishes I do not do so at someone’s command.”
“What about by request?” Comet pleaded. “With respect we would ask for your help.”
“Intriguing.” Lunabelle replied. “What might you wish for if such a wish was granted.”
“We’re stuck!” Comet said eagerly. “We stepped in this terrifying glue and no one can get us out of it.”
“Glue you say.” Lunabelle said as she walked closer and crouched before the glue puddle. Comet tried to lift a foot, the unbreakable elastic tension of the glue allowing her what little slack it ever gave. Lunabelle examined it closely, a smile plain on her face. “Amazing stuff you are wearing.”
“Wearing?” Ukuni said as she crossed her arms. “A strange word to use for something latched to us like a second skin.”
“Interesting either way.” Lunabelle stood. “As far as I can tell that stuff is completely and totally irremovable.”
“Tell us something we don’t know.” Ukuni scoffed.
“Please, please, please.” Comet pleaded. “Wish us out of this stuff.”
“It does seem like I might be your only hope to ever take another step as long as you live.” Lunabelle agreed as she crossed her arms. “But you will have to do something for me for me cast some wishes.”
“Anything!” Comet pleaded. “We would do anything to get unstuck!”
“What about you dear?” Lunabelle asked as she turned to Ukuni. “What would you do to have the tender soles of your feet separated from the prison that holds them?”
Ukuni looked away as her face turned red. The usually stoic ninja could not help hide her emotion and shame. Lunabelle waited until she turned her face back. “I would do anything to be free.”
“Splendid!” Lunabelle said with a grin. “As for what I want you might be able to guess. She looked back toward the lamp and gestured to a faint stream of smoke linking her to it. She snapped her finger, triggering a wish and the smoke lit up but stayed put. Again and again, she snapped but the lamp and the smoke remained untouched. “As you can see, I am completely and totally stuck to this thing and no power I possess can sever the connection. I have been working for years to get loose of this lamp but I am super fucking stuck.”
“So, we get you unstuck if you get us unstuck.” Ukuni asked. “I can respect that.”
“Well not so easily.” Lunabelle admitted. “There is nothing within the feeble power you both possess that can set me free. However, there is a component in a far off ruin that I might be able to use to eventually spring myself from this lamp. I will free you if you go get it.”
“We will do it!” Ukuni agreed, the desperation clear on her voice.
“Then we begin at once.” Lunabelle said as she stood between the pair and raised a hand. “This will be dangerous and challenging and I am not responsible for anything that happens to you.”
“Seems fair to me.” Comet agreed.
“Do it.” Ukuni insisted.
“Here we go!” Lunabelle said as she snapped her fingers, light filling the view of Comet and Ukuni as the magic of the wish flowed over them and took them into the unknown.
