Description This radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995. Radio conversation released by the chief of naval operations, 10-10-95.

CANADIANS: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

AMERICANS: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid collision.

CANADIANS: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid collision.

AMERICANS: This is a captain of a US Navy ship. I say again divert YOUR course

CANADIANS: No, I say again, divert YOUR course.

AMERICANS: This is the Aircraft Carrier USS LINCOLN, the second largest ship in the United States Atlantic Fleet. We are accompanied with three Destroyers, three Cruisers and numerous vessels. I DEMAND that you change your course 15 degrees north. I say again, that's one-five degrees north, or counter-measures will be taken to ensure the safety of this ship.

CANADIANS: This is a lighthouse. Your call though.

In theΒ defenceΒ of the USN, it's a joke that dates back to the 1930's. So not 100% true in hindsight

you do know that one aircraft carrier had the power to wipe that land mass off the map before that ship got there right? its a commercial anyway, not real.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ravajava In reply to malibuman75 [2012-09-09 04:06:18 +0000 UTC]

Not a commercial, and old joke dating back to the late 1700's. Just didn't know that when I posted it.

But I don't see how a carrier could wipe out Newfoundland and Labrador. Maybe the lighthouse, but not the land it stands on

malibuman75 In reply to Ravajava [2012-09-10 05:03:26 +0000 UTC]

it was a small landmass off the coast of newfoundland that had a lighthouse on it in the commercial lol. and it could not date back to the 1700s before radio transmission, and radar. it is a joke that spawned probably back in the 60s, they made a commercial about it.

We are actually both wrong. Did some research. It dates back to a 1931 The Drumheller Review featuring a British ship in the 1800's. There is no radio conversation of course, but instead it is a one panel comic featuring an argument between the ships captain and his first mate. The joke re-emerged in 39, 88, 89, 92 and then here in 96.

It's okay.

Turned out to be not true anyway Found out almost a year later though

So rest easy knowing that your nuclear carriers aren't running into Atlantic coast lighthouses -_-

Well... the US has committed the most friendly fire of any nation involved in Afghanistan... The US and the UK being the only ISAF countries in the conflict to commit friendly fire ending in friendly casualties.

So... that may be a bit worse...

I remember getting this is a chain e-mail several years ago. Very funny! I'm not sure what the dA policy is on posting things you didn't make though.

Snopes seems to have found no evidence that this is true. [link]

Sorry, but Snopes says it's false.

[link]

But if you don't believe Snopes, the official duty log says that on October 10 1995, the USS Lincoln was nowhere near Newfoundland - it was on stand-down in California, having just finished a Tiger Cruise from Hawaii.

[link]

While a funny joke, it's not true.

Probably was pretty far out but the lighthouse felt they were getting a bit close. If you are on Facebook check out this pic,it is the original transcript [link] !/photo.php?pid=11214994&op=3&o=global&view=global&subj=332930452381&id=629545009
