Description
A moment later, the Borg’s defensive shields begin to flicker, . . . and then suddenly, . . . the shields drop entirely. Slowly and gradually, the 8 massive cubes that comprise the Fusion Cube begin to decouple and drift apart. Green static electrical charges brought about by the unscheduled decoupling spark between the separating cubes.
OPERATIONS OFFICER: “Sir, the Verteron torpedoes seems to have knocked their primary systems off-line. Sensors indicate that their shields are down, warp and transwarp systems are off line, and the neural link that unites the Borg is completely shut down. While life support systems remain on line, they are essentially, . . . dead in space.”
FLEET CAPTAIN: “So the Borgs on this ship have been cut off from the rest of the collective, but surely the drones on board can still communicate with eachother, correct?”
SCIENCE OFFICER T’SHANIK: “Sensors indicate no Borg drone activity of any kind on board the vessel. I can’t explain it. They all seem to be in sleep mode. The sudden disruption of all subspace systems seems to have shut them down.”
OPS OFFICER: “Perhaps the torpedoes or the static charges knocked out their internal comm systems as well.”
SCIENCE OFFICER T’SHANIK: “Whatever the reason, their drones are now completely inactive. The cubes are simply, . . . adrift.”
TACTICAL OFFICER: “It could also be a trap. Sir, the Borg home world will have detected that the neural link between these ships and the rest of the hive-collective has been severed.”
FLEET CAPTAIN: “Yes, but with subspace communications out, they won’t have any way to know exactly what happened to them.”
TACTICAL OFFICER: “Nevertheless, they may be preparing to send in reinforcements.”
FLEET CAPTAIN: (To the Tactical Officer) “Understood. We’ll wait 5 minutes to make certain that they haven’t automatically activated an auto self-destruct. Then well send a heavily armed landing party aboard, to make sure that they aren’t just ‘playing dead.’ If they really are offline, we’ll signal Starfleet to send security and medical rescue teams in. Let’s see how many Borg drones we can rescue before their reinforcements arrive. And have Engineering and retrieval/salvage teams do what they can to make sure that the Borg drones stay off line. We don’t want to give their automated systems a chance to reboot and reestablish their link.”
TACTICAL OFFICER: “Aye, Captain.”
HELMSMAN ZOD: “How long before we can expect the Borg to send reinforcements, sir?”
FLEET CAPTAIN: “There’s no telling. We’ll need to be ready for them to arrive at any moment.”
