Description
Famous for its impressive speed and firepower, the latest iteration of the C-Wing fighter, the CX-282, is among the pre-eminent starfighters in the galaxy.
The C-Wing’s distinctive twin-fuselage design accommodates a crew of 4. While the C-Wing can be easily flown in combat by a single pilot, it can also accommodate an additional co-pilot, gunner, and/or a bombardier. The double-cockpit design is also ideal for training.
In addition to its biological crew, the C-Wing also has capacity for up to two on-board astromech droids (one behind each cockpit) for repairs, astronavigation, targeting assist, and other combat support roles.
Notable for its remarkable speed and turret-weapons, the C-Wing has quickly made a name for itself, racking up an impressive number of victories since entering service. Its iconic twin-fuselage design has inspired the names of several highly successful C-Wing squadrons including: The Twin Tigers, The Double Dragons, and The Double Daggers.
The C-Wing’s sleek lines, variable geometry S-foils, and powerful engines also make this craft highly effective at atmospheric combat. Its variable-geometry S-foils rotate upward when landed to minimize its footprint in the landing bay.
The CX-282 is heavily armed with:
- Twin wingtip blaster cannons.
- A triple-barrel dorsal turret with a full 360/180 overhead firing arc.
- Two double-barrel rapid-fire ventral turrets for dogfighting, air-to-fleet attacks, or precision air to-surface strafing runs.
- Turrets can fire as blaster cannons or as ion cannons with the flip of a switch.
- Six forward-mounted torpedo launchers.
- Two forward-mounted missile bays accommodate a wide variety of advanced ordnance types including concussion missiles.
Inspired by the SRB42 sublight engines of the YT-1300, the C-Wing’s powerful XJV-34567 engines are largely responsible for the craft’s remarkable performance.
While the C-Wing is perfectly suited to its role as a space-superiority fighter/interceptor, its speed, heavy armament, avionics, and performance characteristics have also made it adept serving as a fighter/bomber, escort fighter, or reconnaissance craft.

Double E-Wing, like the Double Mustang? there is a similar custom b-wing called the Deathraven you should model. REALY COOL.

I like all of those approaches. So I'm thinking that each seat can be quickly reconfigured to accommodate any of those possible arrangements, depending on crew availability. It should just be a question of software. For that matter, it could also be configured to accommodate training or passengers.

Thanks for your interest, and for your interesting question. I'm thinking many hours, but less than a day. You could probably lean back and nap for a few hours in that thing, but I wouldn't recommend an overnight mission. This is not really in my "wheelhouse." It sounds like you may be more familiar with this issue. What would you recommend?

Thanks for the vote of confidence! This was a fun project to work on. I'm genuinely surprised that Disney/Lucasfilm isn't generating more innovative fighter designs than they are. So, in lieu of having more "canon" ships to build, I thought I'd try designing another one myself. I wanted this new ship to feel like it was part of the Star Wars universe, but I also wanted it to be something that was a little bit new and different. I literally started off going through the alphabet looking at letter-shapes that had interesting potential as the basis for a fighter-craft, but that hadn't already been well-established in canon. The "C-Wing" technically existed in "Legends," but it wasn't really fleshed out much. Looking at the C-shape, there were a lot of possible ways to go with it, but I thought it might be fun to explore a double-fuselage design, like the F-82 Twin Mustang from WWII. The F-82 is such an odd, distinctive design, (like something a kid would come up with) but also pretty cool and innovative. It's got tons of character, and as I understand it was really fast, and pretty successful in the field. So the designation "CX-282" is a nod to the F-82.
We got to see a twin-fuselage design in the Empire Strikes Back, at the Cloud City, with its interesting "Twin-Pod Cloud Car" design. That ship confirmed the technical validity of a twin-fuselage design in the Star Wars universe. But we still hadn't really seen it on a mainstream starfighter (as least so far as I was aware.) The Star Wars universe is BIG, so I'm sure that there are plenty of designs out there that I'm unaware of. Anyway, I wanted a cockpit that could relate to the X-Wing and the Y-Wing, but would also be a bit more curvy, sleek, and futuristic. The final cockpit design ended up being so elongated that I imagined two people seated in each cockpit, for a total crew of 4. That's consistent with the back-story of the C-Wing, and also a nice point of difference from most other existing Star Wars fighters. I like to imagine a cool scene in which named characters could look over at eachother in the adjacent cockpit and exchange a knowing look, a salute, or a "thumbs up." That's something we've never really seen before.
I stayed with a fairly straightforward color scheme to match the general format of existing Rebel Fighters. While the form is literally built around a stylized "C," the end design has got quite a bit more going on, so I settled on a stripe-pattern that would reinforce the C-shaped theme. The rounded contours of the tail reminded me of the Millennium Falcon a bit, so I thought it might be fun to give it a modified wrap-around engine exhaust, which we really haven't seen on any other Rebel Fighters. I liked that it was evolving into a larger craft, but I didn't want anyone to think that it was big and bulky and slow. So giving it a design feature that would remind you of the fast and powerful Falcon seemed like a good thing. A friend of mine always likes to put turrets on his Star Wars ships, and it's hard to argue with the effectiveness of that design, so I decided to go all-in on that approach with the C-Wing. While the turrets can be controlled by the gunner manually, they can also fire via auto-targeting computer control. I kind of like the idea of the turrets pivoting and firing continually, picking off targets in all different directions, as the C-Wing wends its way through a battle. Again, this is something that we haven't see a lot of in Star Wars.
The blaster on the turrets can roll a full 180 degrees, so they have a great clear firing arc. The lower turrets operate similarly. While the wings (S-foils) get in the way of the lower turrets a little bit, they can automatically rotate up and out of the way, to allow for a full 360 degree firing are on the bottom as well, if that is needed. It also has 6 torpedo tubes, and two large missile bays, so it would really pack quite a wallop.
I intentionally didn't give the C-Wing a specific place in the Star Wars timeline. So you can put it in wherever you'd like to put it. You can imagine it being in the era of the Rebellion, or alternately in the era of the New-Republic, or the Resistance, or the era after the fall of the First Order. With it's sleek lines, I guess I kind of imagine it being a newer design, perhaps later in the time line. Like every cool design, I like to imagine that it is used by both the Republic (or whatever they are calling it in the Post-First-Order period) and by the "Mandalorian Knights" that are featured in my (head canon) online comic book story. If it was set in this era, I like to imagine that it was constructed by Corellian Engineering Corporation (CEC). That would not only explain the Falcon-like engine configuration, but it also gives this fighter another reason to be called the C-Wing ("C" for Corellian.)
Anyway, I'm very glad to hear that you like it! Thanks so much for the awesome comment!

this really looks to me at least like an E-Wing made love to a VCX-700 Heavy Courier.
