I can answer that.  Despite the K-Wing's impressive collection of armaments, it has a terrible blind spot.  If this large relatively slow craft were attacked from behind, (and slightly above), it would be completely vulnerable.  I've heard stories of real-life World-War II bomber crews modifying their aircraft with additional defensive guns to take care of blind spots just like this.  So I thought it would be fun to resolve that pesky blind spot issue.

Hello:

 I now totally see why you did that! . My problem is the poly-count though... but if I could, I would add a ventral-aft laser battery like the one in the dorsal section so it has some protection there.
