Description This is one from the thumbnailing for A Fistful of Ed. This scene turned into the one where Edd collapses onto the table with his "rambunctious roughneck" line. Kudos to Sam for voicing him with such impact.

Even though we ended up using it anyway, this was something I drew mostly for atmosphere: something to get the -feeling- of the rest of the scene.. From the first time we did the read-through it just felt right that the lights should be down, save for this one spot of warmth that he's sort of huddling around. Like his little sanctuary.

There's lots of cool things in that ep.. one of the things I really liked that was already in the script, was how it established Double Dee as not just intelligent, but -nurturing-. He's not tutoring people with math, he's hosting a freaking egg-hatching club.

Then, later on, after we've "seen" him beat the crap out of everyone, we're subtly *re-establishing* his character by showing him bring a flower to bloom with his sensitive, NURTURING, care.

Deep stuff!

Gosh, I remember watching this episode as a kid; and honestly I thought it was cool that everyone was actually scared of Double D instead of seeing him as a weak dork.

I hadn't watched Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy in years so I had gone to the internet to see if I could find any episodes to watch and on a whim, decided to watch this one first. I was super amazed by the QUALITY. I mean, beyond it being full-length, it was also amazingly in-depth. It made me sad that the series didn't have more episodes like that because immediately, it became one of my favourite episodes of the entire series.

Thank you for sharing the thumbnail image.

Love the perspective.

Okay, I'm about to sound super dumb here........
But I haven't been following your work. I had just favorited a thing or two here or there. But I saw this and I said to myself, "That's awesome perspective. It looks like a story-board panel." Then I read your artist-comment and I'm going to ask a question that is going to make me sound like a retarded retard, but please bear with me.

Were you a storyboard or conceptional artist on the show?

I'm interested to know because I'm getting my B.A. in illustration with the intent of going into story-boarding and when I have the opportunity to talk to a storyboard artist, it excites me a great deal.

But whether you are one or not, your art is wonderful and it's really a technical style that I very much enjoy.

Don't feel dumb! But yes, I was a board artist on the show for almost 4 years. This covered work on the holiday specials, the 5th & 6th seasons and the movie. Toward the beginning of my stint there I got to do Character Design and toward the end I got to direct. I was in college a while before that, but I actually dropped out TO get the AKA job.

Thanks for the compliments! Let me know if you have any questions.

creastorm In reply to Raveneesimo [2010-08-27 04:21:16 +0000 UTC]

I do have questions. (thank you for answering the other already and so quickly!)

As I have mentioned, I'm wanting to be a storyboard artist but my illustration teacher is more of just a commercial illustrator/book illustrator. So he doesn't know anything about storyboarding at all. In fact, I kind of taught him about boarding, giving a report, going over different kinds and stuff. You know, the stuff your average fanatic knows. ^_^

But I have to admit that I know absolutely nothing of "breaking into the biz." I know your average comic book artist pedals their wares at conventions. How do storyboard artists do it? I've read a few people's stories of how they got in and all of them seemed to get the job by chance. You can imagine, I'd hate to leave my life's career goal up to chance and fate.

Raven here, using my other account. I think it says a lot of the other kids that they could believe such a thing about Edd. They have already dismissed him as a weirdo and somehow ascribed a capacity for violence in him sheerly based on that... It reminds me of when I was still in highschool: my friends and I hovered on the fringe. We weren't a wild bunch, but most of us wore dark clothes. We were just shy people who didn't like to stand out. This fact alone led to rumors of my brother and me 'sacrificing' cats in the woods. We were also heavily targeted after the whole "Columbine" thing.

..Yeah. It's a maddening situation to have people telling you who you are... especially when you, being yourself, are pretty damn sure you know what's what. I can see why Edd was coming so undone about it.

Ya, I know. B the way, when I meant "Wouldn't have believed he was that vicious" lol. It does suck when people hate you. They don't even take the time to get to know you better, and they just automatically hate you, and they miss out on a good friendship.

One of my favorite episodes

Thanks for sharing

But, TBH I also though the flower bloomed because of his tears but sensitivity has always been apart of his character so that also makes sense too.

Your emotional approach you take to your artwork is so awe-inspiring and rarity to be seen in most. How do you do it?

Oooh, awesome! I LOVE that ep. It's got some pretty touching moments, and moments were you genuinely feel sorry for the characters, but it doesn't break the flow of the show. Somehow this ep makes you feel bad for the characters but still be able to laugh at them... like at the scene where Double D's crying over the flower, I felt bad for him, but then I cracked up when he banged his head on the overhanging light when Jimmy startled him. It's stuff like that that's part of the reason I love this show. XD

Hmm... I ramble too much, and I'm not even sure if I made sense there. >>; Eheh.

Raveneesimo In reply to AnimatEd [2009-07-28 07:36:13 +0000 UTC]

I know. XP That idea came up, but all of us thought it was a bit much. It was a matter of coincidence that the flower bloomed at *just* the right moment.

Also in this drawing you can see I was trying to wedge in the idea that he's set up a punnet square.. but it was too complicated to include without explaining it in dialogue, so it eventually disappeared.

Raveneesimo In reply to AnimatEd [2009-07-28 07:53:57 +0000 UTC]

I think it pretty much is just a diagram, I don't think anyone actually physically does them like this.. At the time, I didn't see why Edd would be quite so into gardening, so I was reaching to justify it by trying to make it "look" like a science fair project he's set up. Of course, through working on that ep and just thinking a lot about Edd, it makes sense that he would care about plants like he would children or bugs or any other living things. He has his beloved cactus, Jim, after all.

I have to make things work for ME damnit! Otherwise I can't take them seriously. LoL

And I -do- take them seriously.

O_O

Ohhh, that makes sense, I could see how that would work. I think it still comes off as an Edd thing to do, though. He seems to be in a lot of clubs at the school, and it makes more sense that he'd be into splicing and raising flowers than it does that he tried out for the school's football team (let alone that he actually MADE IT onto the team). : P But yes, mayhaps this flower was going to be a little friend for Jim.
