Edgar felt a bit of dread, the way Marcus glared at him, but the first round round, Marcus told him to focus on defense for this round. After blocking and dodging for a while, he felt a bit more relaxed- that feeling of dread may have been overcast. Despite a few hits on the times he wasn't quick to defend, it was a good start.

For round 2, Marcus wanted Edgar to switch to offense. From the get-go, Edgar started out with a few simple jab and straight combos, but Marcus maintained a good defense. Towards the end, Edgar pressed his offense, landing a couple decent hits.

Round 3 was where the warm-ups ended and actual sparring began: Edgar and Marcus fighting more in earnest, it felt a bit strange to the young blacksmith, but he thought Marcus was doing good despite spending most of his time balancing finances. It was then something unexpected happened- a quick jab, followed by a a hook and uppercut dropped him to the mat- more surprised from the sudden changed, as opposed to the ebbing sting of the punches. After getting up, though, Marcus turned up the tempo, dodging Edgar' punches and landing hard hits of his own. By the time it was over, Edgar felt bruises and burns on his face and midsection- he realized then with a heavy feeling in his stomach that Marcus was holding back, and in the next round, the proverbial kid gloves would come off..

Round 4 saw Edgar trying to keep a decent offense, but spending more time trying to avoid Marcus, But it proved little good- most times he tried to block and dodge, he felt Marcus' gloves crashing in, causing sweat and pain to explode from the impacted areas. Marcus was picking off Edgar with surgical efficiency coupled with experience. Despite getting a few hits in, Edgar may as well have tried to stop water from being wet: It was only after a feint and a and a brutal hook/uppercut combo to the face that he felt suddenly lightheaded. Dropping to his knees, and then to his face..

After a few minutes, Edgar managed to sit up, but he didn't know what to say: while the start was good, he was outclassed and utterly beaten..

Marcus: It hurts, doesn't it?

Edgar: ..... Among other things...

Marcus: It was bound to happen, sooner or later.

Edgar: ?.. But...

Marcus: You've made a lot of improvement, make no mistake, but this is something everyone has to learn: You grow strong, but the world is quick to catch up, be it circumstance-wise, or your enemies. It's a kind of balance. Tell me, did you expect things to go as they did at the start?

Edgar: No, I was... worried, actually.

Marcus: And yet you calmed down- let your guard down. And that's enough for things to tilt against you.

Edgar: Ugh... yeah... now I know what it feels like being metal in the tempering stage of my work...

Marcus: Good analogy- it's only with constant practice that you can improve. But don't forget that no matter how good you are, there will always be someone better.

Edgar: *starts getting up* ... Yeah... *winces a bit, putting his left glove to his cheek* Ugh, you hit like dump truck. When did you get to hit like that...?

Marcus: When you asked for my help, did you judge me by all the paperwork I've done?

Edgar: No.

Marcus: And it's well you didn't- I trained as long as Rosa, but the long story's better for another day. Putting that aside, how do you feel about your match against Axl?

Edgar: *thinks for a bit* I thought I was ready, but after this..., I feel like there's a lot I need to do.

Marcus: That's good: you're aware of your faults and weaknesses. A lot of fighters let their pride get in the way of self-improvement.
*walks over to Edgar* Despite getting clobbered, just now, I think you'll do fine.

Edgar: *looks up at Marcus* Really?

Marcus: Yeah. Just work on your defense, and you should come out on top. Can you walk?

Edgar: I think so..

Marcus: Take a breather, then. Afterwards, I'll show you a trick or two- give you an edge for fight time.

Setting up the work didn't take long, but I wanted to do something to keep it from feeling drab, so I did the time like it was early sunrise, as evidenced by the lighting in the windows- took a little time, but I thought it worked pretty well. Also, doing Edgar sitting up as he is took a little time to hammer out- while this work was pretty much him getting trounced as a part of his prep work, it turned into a good bit of character development between him and Marcus. The latter is usually on the sidelines, or minding finances, so drawing him in this capacity was a good experience- I hope to do more with him, later on. All in all, this was a small project I enjoyed working on.
