Description Speaking of squirrels!

This happy little fellow turned up in the garden the other day and barely escaped being captured. There's a story there, yes, and you can now read it here:

The Happy Squirrel   Story time, dear watchers!
I keep a trusty bird feeder out on the lawn and the other day I just happened to look out the kitchen window and I saw this!

This cutie was munch-munch-munching away like crazy. Just stuffing her face with sunflower seeds.
So of course I ran for the camera and had fun snapping some "Zomg, there's actually a squirrel in the garden!" photos.

She was very, very watchful and looking around all the time while some of the small birds actually tried to chase her away (poor thing).

Such a beauty! Just look at those ear tufts! So looong.
But after a while I started to think to myself: Exa

In short: Gizmo and Oliver were after it, but it took refuge high up in a wild cherry tree and I could get some very pretty shots of it, if I may say so myself. This one is my favourite.
(Everything becomes so much better when flowers are involved, right?)

I've actually been dying to upload this photo, but I've been poorly for a week and basically too feeble to deal with . . . most things. Today is better though! Yay!

Oh, you throwing some slack at me, bro? :runs to tree and tries to climb tree: :squirrel ''giggles'' at the sight of me falling, and runs up the tree more: WHY YOUUUUUU! And also, more ear-tipped red squirrels! I already seen three before this one.

This one isn't ear-tipped, there's just a branch in the way of that one ear.
In fact, she had very nice tufts on both ears. Same squirrel:

RavenMontoya In reply to AshiraVision [2017-05-17 00:21:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is! On both accounts.
We only have red squirrels in Sweden.
(Which is probably a good thing, judging by the things I've read about grey squirrels in the UK.)

AshiraVision In reply to RavenMontoya [2017-05-19 07:24:38 +0000 UTC]

That's so awesome! We only have grey and black ones here. Oh my, is it bad? o-o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenMontoya In reply to AshiraVision [2017-05-19 23:23:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, in the UK it is bad because the greys threaten the survival of the reds. The grey are almost twice as big as the red and takes all the food, pretty much. It was introduced to the country because of its fur (of course), but that's never a good idea, as history has so often shown.
So I'm very happy we don't have grey squirrels in Sweden. Only the smaller red one, as it should be.

Aww hes a cutie and I am glad they didnt get him, hes too cute. This is a great shot of him in the tree. Its perfect with the flowers. I think it would have been a great shot still even if it didnt have the flowers, he has such a cute look on his face. I hope you feel better.

Thank you, I'm much better now. Feels so much easier.
And I do love squirrels!
I looked at the other photos I got of this one and I now think it's a female and that she has babies somewhere because I can see her teats in one photo and they're quite swollen. So she probably has lots of little mouths to feed out in the forest. Thank the heavens Gizmo and Oliver didn't catch her!

I'm better too, thank you.

Yes, I suspect the squirrel has babies to feed this time of year so I hope it can stay away from the cats.

If you put a collar with a bell, they are spotted more easily by wildlife  (careful, the collar have to be elasticised cause your cats are going in forest place )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RavenMontoya In reply to Omoidenoki [2017-05-17 22:38:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know.
It's a good idea in theory, but my cats hate collars.
Even if I could get them to accept them I think it would get very expensive pretty fast though. My neighbour's cat wears a collar and he drops his collars in my garden very often. At the most I've returned 7 collars to my neighbour. And he has only one cat! Imagine how many my four could drop all over the place...

Omoidenoki In reply to RavenMontoya [2017-05-18 18:08:21 +0000 UTC]

I've an idea leave all bells on the ground...if they walk on a bell, spotted
No but under the bird feeder, you can put little ropes with bells (just on the side where birds are blind) 3 lines of rope

RavenMontoya In reply to Omoidenoki [2017-06-04 22:50:54 +0000 UTC]

*going through old comments*

You know, this was a really great idea! I've hanged bells on the bird feeder and it really helps a lot. The cats have stopped the jumping.
So thank you so, so much! It was a brilliant solution you came up with!
