Description
*shakes fist at artwork* Driving me insane...! As if I wasn't already headed in that direction and picking up speed! This shows the reframe/recrop that I'm considering, because frankly Balthier's torso and I just are not getting along.
If you'd like to see a STUPID HUGE version of this iteration that shows the new detail without the crop/reframe, have a peek (dialup users bewareful - it's 400k):

AWESOME! Thank you!
I am working on fixing this one... I re-drew Balthier completely; he's in another deviation if you want to see him. My mission tonight is to finish Fran and add her back into the scene.. Photoshop WOOO!

Hmmm, now that I see the re-crop, how would it look if his arm were out to the side, as if her were leaning on a wall. It'd make his leaning torso make sense, and keep the feeling of relaxation intact.
On a different subject, now I'm the one who's taking forever to reply! Agh! I will reply soon! I will!

I hashed this idea out a bit in Photoshop (it is a good one!); without just a whole helluva lotta luck (that it is a good idea doesn't alter in the least that I am having difficulty making it work!)... RARRGH. It's gotten to the point wherein the drawing will probably just be left as-is, mistakes and all, and I'll view it as a learning experience, and make the next one More Betterer.
And now I am once again the one who owes you - I blame work, it pays the bills but is otherwise Evil and makes me tired!

And, again, don't worry about it. I know the feeling.

Oh, dear.. on any given day, roll 1d6; 1, I make sense; 2-3, I make sense but disturb people without meaning to; 4-6, I make no sense whatsoever. It's not your fault.. laws of chance and all that..
Anyway!
Right: the drawing is just pencil on paper, but it's just sketchpad paper, so it can only take so much erasing and re-thinking and fiddling-with. Thus, I scanned it, opened it in Photoshop and utilised my Wacom to try out a few ideas - handy, because with a little layer-based cleverness I can click back and forth between the original and the edits and see if I am just making things worse: in this case, I definitely was. Your idea of putting Balthier's hand out in front of him, as if ti were resting on a railing, is a Very Cool one, I just had no luck whatsoever getting it to behave. Ugh! Happens.
Make sense..? (one-in-six chance...)
As a rule, I draw as little in Photoshop as I can get away with (I will correct things, if I must).. I just can't get the line quality I want unless I'm using my beloved .3 mechanical pencil.

Ah, I see. It all makes sense now! I'm sorry you're having no luck. I hate that.
Of course, your pic is still more dynamic and advanced than anything I can put out at this point.
Oh, I know how that feels. It's pretty often that I get replies of "EH?", too. More when I'm talking than when writing, though, interestingly enough. My friends just kind of shrug it off, though, and say, "Oh, it's just Morgan."
I generally don't like to go into computer drawing, either, unless I'm cleaning something up that I already drew by hand. I love the feel of pen and pencil on paper. Mechanical pencil, too, in fact.

Well, having thus put it away for over a week, I have every hope that when I pick it back up with will soon become Awesome. RARR! Right? Rarr? Heh!
Hey, don't sell yourself short on dynamicism; you do things with abstraction and pattern-work that boggle me: your tribal tattoo-like pattern for the elements in your game, f'r instance - NICE! I just can't do stuff like that; I'm too literal-minded!
As for boggling/confusing people, I like to accuse them of ignoring me - totally shifting the blame for the breakdown in communication to their court, implying that it isn't that I cannot form a logical sentence, they cannot hear! Hahah! I am notorious for that sorta thing.
MECHANICAL PENCIL FTW. I swear, one could all but attribute all of this Balthier/Fran art to the .3 mechanical pencil I bought; I loved it so much that I had to find SOMETHING to draw with it - the rest is history, and furry porn!

MorganEdwardAshton In reply to razimo [2007-04-27 22:52:39 +0000 UTC]
Yes, RARR! I know that feeling. Sometimes I wish that I did art in 3D so I could throttle it. Good luck on getting it to work out. Sometimes letting art sit in a corner and pout helps.
Thank you for the compliments. By dynamism, though, I meant when it came to figure drawing. I'm still learning, though, and that's why I'm trying to get to the Art Institute, so that I can BECOME more dynamic.
As for twisting around people's misunderstandings, that's awesome. That's definitely something my sister would do more than me. I usually can think of crazy comebacks, but only hours after the fact. I just tend to let people try and figure me out. They squirm uncomfortably, and I laugh. Then, I re-explain, if necessary.
Wow, .3? Where on earth did you find a .3 mechanical pencil? I'm lucky if I can find a .5 that I can use....I just got into using .5s recently, in fact. I used to stick to .7s.
Yay, furry porn!

No, believe me, you Don't want to do art in a beatable format! Or maybe I'm the only one with the occasional .. ah.. moment. I mean, the Balthier/Fran stuff is mostly safe, it's pretty rare for me to go ape on pencil art.. it's just a 'sketch,' it's not 'serious.' It's 'serious' when I get it into Photoshop, but believe me there is still more than enough delicious frappuccino in the world than what it needed to keep me from thwacking my laptop. *pets it* Paintings, on the other hand... well... there have been a few Moments, with.. a hammer, and.. yeah.
I blame my art professor. I've never thwacked one of my sculpures, no matter HOW mad I've gotten at some shoulder or hoof or other. *pets them also* Good little stinkies! (Plasticine clay has sulphur in it, did you know?
)
Oh, figure drawing, kami on crackers...!! You've seen the go-rounds I've had with that thrice-damn'd Magicians sketch, and you think that I am capable of dynamism in figurative works!? Damn, man, no! More seriously, though, check out my fav'd works - there's a figure drawing tutorial in there that made me bow down. Kneeling. Genuflection. Just brilliant! I have studied it muchly, and will continue to do so!
My best comebacks are usually hours/days later; once in awhile, though, I have a flash of brilliance. When in doubt, fall back on the old "No flirting." You'd be surprised at what a good job that does of setting people back on their haunches!
Otherwise.. yessiree, a .3 pencil! Oh I Loves It So Much! It is a Staedtler.. you've probably used their awesome white erasers. I found it at a Hobby Lobby - do you have those in your neck of the woods? Otherwise, in any given art store, to find the Best mechanical pencils, skip the 'art pencil' section and look in the drafting supplies. All sorts of awesome, awesome pencils to be had..! .3 through .9 - yes, point NINE - leads; even lead holders if you need something bigger than a .9. (Although if I needed something bigger than that, I'd just whip out a woodless pencil. I don't use them often, but when they're what you need, nothing else will do!)

Yeah, you're probably right. I already do enough angered paper-shredding, so it might be a really good thing that I don't use more expensive mediums than computer paper on a regular basis. Luckily for my computer, Lyle (I name inanimate objects), though, I care too much about what all is on my hard drive to want to destroy him.
Ewwww, stinky scuptures! It's nice to know you haven't killed any of them, though.
As far as the figure-drawing dynamism goes, you're still way ahead of where I am, I think, but as we discussed before, we're our own worst critics. I checked out that tutorial, and I liked the idea of the action lines. If you want a really good resource, check out Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Figure Drawing. That is a friggin' awesome book. While you're at it, you should also check out Drawing Dynamic Hands. They're both awesome. I have those, and his clothing guide, which isn't quite as nice. The hands book is a huge help, even though I still haven't managed to get all the way through it or the figure drawing one. It really helps that I really like his style of hands.
I went to Hobby Lobby today, and picked up a .3. I havenβt really had a chance to use it yet, but Iβll get back to you with how it goes. I checked it out a bit, and I really like how thin and light the lines are compared to a .5 or .7. That should really help with erasing them for when I ink. (I tend to draw with very DARK lines, so it makes it very annoying if I mess up.)

About the pose problem, my possibility:
Fran laying in bed (I seen a hip in the previous sketch??) and Balthier sitting in the floor in front of her. Then his arms: reposing in his legs, with the hands falling relaxed at the center (and the legs maybe flexed).

Ah, now I have three mixed drinks in me. Now I am having a Good Time. Beware!
Yes.. I like Balthier's relaxed attitude; and while the composition may not end up being ideal, I think that if I fiddle with it excessively it will only suffer from the tweaking. A lesson that the K (that former art prof of mine, and honestly, with a name like Koczwara, why do you Think I would call her The K?) that I actually took to heart it "Quit Messing With It. Draw Another One!" ... she's right about that much, if little enough else. Sometimes, one just needs to accept that the best way to make it perfect is to draw it all over again.
Where was I...Distracted! Yes, I have been, eesh.. sorry about that.. but HEY! 8D Now I'm not, wahoo! Go 'head an' feel sorry for yourself; because just between us I am going to mix another drink and then email you. Gomen ne.

Hmm....His arm does look odd to me, but it's mostly because (on my ancient, decrepit monitor) the bends and lines in his arm echoes the lines to the left and it kind of misleads my eye. The pose of his arm could be better, even if it's just coming up and not quite grabbing her arm/hand. Or out more, like he was surprised? I'm not an artist, and don't know the character so it's impossible for me to say what would be right for his reaction. I trust you, Sib-chan.
π: 0 β©: 1
razimo In reply to Levade0411 [2007-04-06 02:27:22 +0000 UTC]
Which arm, do you suppose? His left, perhaps? Design-wise, it feels claustrophic to me.. when I get it into Photoshop for real, I really think that I want to add a good chunk onto it.. initially I thought of adding, hmm, maybe 1/3 onto the top, now I'm thinking that I should add 1/3 to 1/2 onto the right side, which would give me space for his arm to be in.
Balthier is very, very casual and sly about everything. Very much a cat, you'd never get a straight answer out of him when a slightly smug smile and a wink would do. He's a pirate.. for practical purposes, combine the understated 'straight-laced, or so he'd like you to believe' nature of Obi with the Piratical Cleverness of Jack and you'd be well within the ballpark for Balthier.

It does feel smooshed. The sides could expand unless you were going for that intimate feel which a smaller space seems to suggest. Hmm...maybe just his fingers brushing her arm? Or hand? Not enough to take over whatever she's initiating. Or if he was really hard-to-get, cross his arms, keep that smirking I know I've got what you want look and ...watch out for her nails!

Synaesthesiac [2007-04-04 11:24:33 +0000 UTC]
he looks more 'suggestive' if you ask me...he's got that Roger Moore thing going on with his eyes. But the pose is wonderful, it's nice to see Fran being the actively affectionate one for once (for some reason, it's usually Balthier doing the cuddling/nibbling/etc)
But no, he doesn't look the slightest bit grumpy.

razimo In reply to Synaesthesiac [2007-04-04 18:22:26 +0000 UTC]
Heeheehee.. in my own mind, Balthier's dialogue for this one was words to the effect of "Oh, really? Yes.. please, even.."
(You will note that I resisted the urge to put some sort of suggestive smiley at the end of that, because I'm sure that what Fran was offering him was tea, or perhaps bagels for breakfast. Honestly, you people are so dirty-minded... )
Heehehehehehee...
Anyway - oh, I am Glad you like the pose! I probably spend way too much time very nerdily contemplating how best to distill This or That facet of their relationship just so into a single image; but it truly warms my dorky little heart to know that someone noticed. Thank you! The context of an image is important to me.. (oh, I'm not going to pretend that I always obsess over meaning/intent, sometimes it's just pictoral fluff).. but when I am in the mood for unspoken dialogue in a scene, I really obsess over it.

Synaesthesiac In reply to razimo [2007-04-05 20:22:58 +0000 UTC]
Tea and bagels served with a side of bunny-girl, perhaps?
I like this also because most artists shy away from showing the two of them in anything but an ambiguous, are-they-or-aren't-they pose, whereas this is straight in there and setting up cameras in the befroom xD
π: 0 β©: 1
razimo In reply to Synaesthesiac [2007-04-06 05:14:19 +0000 UTC]
What's that? Tea and bagels served on a bunny-girl? Heavens, what an image!
........ oh, 'setting up cameras in the bedroom.' Oh, it's midnight and I'm tired and I shouldn't go there.
Oh, I'm going there anyway, and the view is nice.
Well.. as I've said before, all I really want to do with these pieces is, ultimately, to learn to capture the different lights, portray various times of day, that sort of thing. That Fran and Balthier keep getting in my way and doing things which make the nature of their relationship very unambiguous indeed is an unfortunate occurrence for which I simply cannot be held responsible.
I like a nice mystery myself; but dangit all, what with people writing Works of Experimental Fiction wherein he hooks up with Ashe.. honestly! Someone needs to speak strongly for the "Just-Partners-My-Ass" school of thought, might as well be me.
π: 0 β©: 1
Synaesthesiac In reply to razimo [2007-04-06 20:05:13 +0000 UTC]
Having recently completed the game, I don't think they're all that ambigious to be honest. I see an awful lot of strong pointers in their dialogue and their actions to prove that they have a relationship beyond convenience; but ashe? She wants his leather-clas ass (and don't we all?) but I don't see him reciprocating; offering her a flash of the charm mayhap, but nothing more than he did for Penelo (and don't get me started on penelo/bal fanfiction)
This is why I am determined in my quest for literary experimental excellence, perhaps with tea and bagels served on a bunny girl. The balance needs to be tipped, dammit.

She wants his leather-clas ass (and don't we all?)..
Leather pants! Tight ones - they may as well be painted on. Goodness. Could it be that Balthier is Square's gift to the female gamer? Could it? THANK YOU, SQUEENIX.
Otherwise, I could not be more in your corner - if they're 'just partners' then I am a lizard that has to hop from key to key to type out this message. Their relationship is understated, but then a surprising number of things about them are: motives, modus operandi, past, future. These aren't people that lay their cards on the table for just anyone; it would seem to be a matter of custom, habit, and in Balthier's case sheer unmitigated capriciousness, because the last thing anyone would expect of a man like him is subtlety where a woman like Fran is concerned.
As for Ashe, oh, I think that she definitely might, maybe even does love Balthier.. at any rate, she thinks she does. As no less a visonary than Pink Floyd put it: 'Was it love, or was it the idea of being in love?' She's 19, and that's an age where most find it impossible to resist the urge to love something that's a little impossible - in Ashe's case, Freedom, freedom in truth and freedom in idea. Who other than Balthier to so perfectly be the living embodiment of wildness? Of course she loves him.. or loves the idea of him, or loves the idea of loving what he is.
I think he would know that, and humour her very gently. He's not the type to be cruel to someone for so small a crime as wanting something that's irresponsible.
All this having been said, should you need a page or proofreader on your Quest to restore Balance, well.. I make a good cup of tea. Whether or not you then find a bagel to go with it and a bunny-girl to put it on is, of course, entirely up to you.

Synaesthesiac In reply to razimo [2007-04-07 13:01:27 +0000 UTC]
With Ashe, I wonder if there isn't a touch of the rebound in her. She's just lost somebody she clearly cared for, despite their arranged marriage, and seems to be having a tough time reconciling...the way she reacts to his apparition and the loss of her wedding ring clearly indicates she still has strong feelings for Rasler. And then along pops Balthier, whose life (on the surface) has been so different to hers, his values and needs completely alien, plus the fact that he's devilishly handsome and shows some indication of caring for her feelings (no more so than Vaan, true, but perhaps in a less slapdash manner) Of course, the fact that he chooses Fran and his life with her speaks volumes, along with myriad other snippets of sap Squeenix wove in there for us (that scene at Pharos, anyone?)
That said, the thought of yourself as a lizard is appealingly amusing
π: 0 β©: 1
razimo In reply to Synaesthesiac [2007-04-07 21:44:23 +0000 UTC]
Definitely a touch of the rebound! It's almost as if she never got the time to really grieve for Rasler and move beyond him; or perhaps she didn't even want to - after all, he's a part of her life that, in a way, isn't over until the future of Dalmasca is decided once and for all. She spends a good chunk of the game seeming almost puzzled that people are inspired to care about her; not really sure why. As for Balthier, though.. well. I don't think it would have mattered if he was an accountant.. those pants. Not even Ashe the Frost Queen could hope to ignore that.
Anyway... yes.. .. I do think that if he wanted to, Balthier could go home. Arcadia doesn't really seem to mind that he's there, you know? Very much the prodigal son... that he chooses piracy in general and Fran in particular ought to tell anyone all they reallly need to know about him. As for the snippest of sap at Pharos... oh, my oh my oh my. Why oh WHY do they not unlock all of the cutscenes after you beat the game? Oh why.. I would love to see that again, about fifteen more times actually. I mean, yes.. can watch on YouTube, but the quality is pretty poor. *sigh!* That Scene, and still people think that Balthier would ever choose Ashe and a life spent mewed up in a palace!? Honestly! It's practically blasphemy.
Speaking of which..

Even Basch spent half the game staring at Balthier's extremeties. Even a nun would. It's just evil temptation of Squeenix's part *shakes fist*
Balthier could return to Arcadia, sure, but like you say, would he want to? He has a hot partner whose bones he is almost certainly jumping on a regular basis (and, if his comment on the Leviathan is much to go by, we're talking kink-o-rama) a ship and the license to go wherever he chooses. He clearly lives for the thrill of it all...he has bounties aplenty on his head yet he carries on. Not the mark of someone destined to marry the princess and be a good little prince.
Is now a good time to mention that I have that particular scene as a youtube favourite? *sigh*
Is now also a good time to mention that I snorted lemonade all over my keyboard on opening that link?

An even eviler.. er, more evil, sorry.. temptation from Squeenix is the FF XII action figures they're releasing soon.. six full inches of fully poseable Balthier, Mmm Mmm MMM. I could carry on with on, but it wouldn't be to anyplace good, I assure you.
....and, if his comment on the Leviathan is much to go by, we're talking kink-o-rama
It may - or may not - interest you to know that this little remark caused me to projectile-giggle a bit of ice I was munching right off my monitor. *ping!* Oh, man, I hadn't thought about that one in awhile.. So she doesn't like to be tied up, eh? He says that with the casual attitude of a man who could easily list a few things she does like. And what does it say about them that he can be so perfectly calm whilst she's going batshit insane in the background? She's cracking heads and taking names, he's making filthy remarks...What do these people do when they're alone?
A personal favourite is the bit after the Mines where Larsa first leaves with Penelo, Fran says he'll treat her well, no worries. Balthier comes back with 'Nobody knows men like Fran does,' and.. nngh. When I'm done pouring myself back into my chair (Heavens, that voice. Men should not be able to freely control a thing of such power, there should be laws) ... I can only think that it would be obvious to anyone that she knows him very well indeed.
Heehee, lemonade to the keyboard - score!! You're spared from any more abuse from my pitiful photography abilities for the moment; it's dark in here.

The temptation to buy a Balthier and Fran action figure and pose them in perverted and impossible positions (or just like this:[link] ) is just TOO MUCH. What are squeenix DOING to us?
My other half and I both raised our eyebrows and uttered loud 'What The...?' when he said that. Innuendo in a final fantasy game? Won't someone please think of the children? I'm sure Balthier has been on the recieving end of something a little like that a few times before. Bondage fails for them, eh?

....................
..
............................. where did... you.... find that? Heavens, that's delicious...! And yes, I imagine that there's a completely un-mysterious reason for why they're releasing a Balthier but no Fran; it would take careful observation of an atomic clock to portray any more accurately than 'almost instantly' the elapsed time between the sale of the figures and the time it took someone to begin posing them through the entire Kama Sutra, photographing and posting.
Obviously the person thinking of the children (responsible, no doubt, for Reddas' pink pants had the day off when That scene was scripted. Proof that the Universe loves us, and wants us to be happy, don't you think? Otherwise, was it really necessary for you to so innocently point out that 'Bondage fails for them, eh?' .. because that forces, forces! me to wonder what, then, works for them.....
... and draw it when I'm done wondering.
Yeeha!

dammit, I just had a smart and vaguely witty reply typed out involving Fran's arse, x-rated figurines and Reddas' law-defying pants but...DeviantArt ate it. Damn you, Deviantart!
One thing stands though: If you draw such things, I will bestow upon you experimental literary gifts and cookies.
