Startled, I turn around to find him looking over my shoulder. An uncharacteristically serene smile rests on his pale face. I guess I shouldn't be suprised. One day before Soph's birthday and all. Heck, she'd be the only one who'd ever believe me anyway.
"Heh, I'm not that pretty and sure as hell never that calm" he continues. Picking up my copy of The Who's "Endless Wire" he softly sings the first track on the album, "Fragments".
"Dude, you scared me! Do you always have to just pop up like that?" I ask. Then I put the pieces together, "Oh, let me guess, you're just trying to get out of Area 21 and have a chance to be alone aren't you?"
He doesn't respond, he just sings, "Are we breathing out or breathing in/ Are we leaving life, or moving in?"
Noticing the page on my computer screen, his face assumes a business-like posture. "Hey Cris, I have something to ask you."
"Yeah"
"You know it's Sophie's birthday tomorrow right?"
"Yeah"
"I know she's going through a lot. More than anyone should ever have to go through. Don't ask how I know. Let's just say you're not the only one I visit. At any rate, here's what I want you to do: Even if it's only something little, I want you to show Soph that no matter what, through life and death, with dedication, rage and love, you can always carry on. Always.
With that, he nods, and slowly becomes one with the shadows casted by the dim lights of my room. Pushing back my chair, I reach for the CD that The Patient has left carelessly on the floor. As I pick it up, a thin slip of paper falls out. On it, written in what looks like blood but is probably only red marker are three words:

"We'll carry on"
