Description
Strike Squadron FORTY (STRIKERON 40) is divided up into two combat elements when forward deployed. In this instance, RED TEAM, consisting of the light cruiser PARIS (CL-77), the escort carrier HAWK (CVL-82), and the destroyer NORFOLK (DDE-207) along with a pair of screening fighters orbits in close formation near a hellish Cauldron World, HB+33 0567 A-II. Sun-blasted and riven with vulcanism, the world's radiated heat output is sufficient to mask the team's elements against identification. The team cannot hide completely from observation in this manner, but their numbers and composition in this formation will be unclear to hostile forces until they have approached too closely to escape the swift ships of the Terran Empire Navy when the trap is sprung.Artist's note: I was pushing the envelope with this one. The three starships plus the two fighters added up to a little over 2.5 million polygons, where previously the largest render I'd ever done was 1.5 million.
Modeled with Trimble SketchUp. Rendered with Kerkythea.

Yep, Foss was my first thought when I saw the thumbnail! Beautiful!

... I need to figure out just who Chris Foss is, then....

Foss is a legend of bright primary colored sci fi art, and a personal inspiration.

I figured as much, from the context. -- Interestingly bright coloring, though it may not be my first choice for a paint job.
... and just now, I'm understanding what all the years of Star Trek and Star Wars has done to my preconceptions of "what a spaceship should look like". I have a tendency to think of starships in terms of off-whites, pale-greys, and blue or red glowing engines. In this sense, bravo to you, for having opened my eyes, even if just a bit.

I hear you. I've been on something of a personal crusade to get away from Haze Grey spaceships, just because they are so ubiquitous.

Absolutely. In fact Chris Foss was one of the artists I was attempting to channel with this.

As I was saying in the other render I did of this scene, eventually I'm going to have to start making composite images to get everything to fit.

The complexity and detail of your work is impressive. I've considered doing some work in SketchUp but have not, as yet. Are you using the free version of SketchUp, or the Pro?

I'm using the free version of 8.1. From what I recall, the only real difference between the free and pro versions are some file export options and some bells and whistles accompanying apps for presentation.

Uoh! Lord knows how many hours you had to shove into this thing to get it done!
You know, there is something that I saw on Steam that I think might interest you. It's simply called "Space Engineers"
It's like minecraft in space. You create ships and bases, and it's totally up to you how they look, handle, fight, and fly.
I would kill to be able to see something like this being made and actually flown on that game.

I have Space Engineers, actually. I've been sitting on it for a bit with the new content that's come out, because I don't want to start from scratch on some of my projects, just to have to redo them again.
