Description
The Samson's origin was as a simple orbital transfer tug, capable of operating in a high radiation environment occasioned by large gas giants with active magnetic fields. The modular design proved to be rugged and enduring, and before long its operators were cobbling together small weapon packs to defend against predatory competitors and other hazards. This model shown is armed with a 30mm caseless electrically-driven recoilless autocannon (dorsal), and a four-pack 127mm missile launcher for short range defensive engagements. The Samson was designed with a probe-and-basket style cargo docking train arrangement, with propellant pass-through function to allow the craft to draw from propellant stored in propellant cargo modules also designed with pass-through, such as the one shown aft of the spacecraft. Modules have their own RCS thruster array, and a limited AI that allows them to be signaled by a nearby Samson and dock themselves up in whatever train order the spacecraft commander desires.Modeled with Trimble SketchUp. Rendered with Kerkythea. This is a commission for

Beautiful concept. So it can tap into the propellant and oxidizer tanks that are part of the cargo manifest, or just being convenient for usage with everything else hitched up behind? What's the size of the crew?

One person crew. This was a piece I did on commission for a game project. The need to be able to tap into reserves from what you were hauling was a requirement.

One person? Figured you'd have at least two or three.

According to game specs, it's one guy, though I'm sure you could fit one or two more.

Was thinking along the lines of shift rotation and extra hands with maintenance and emergencies. Maybe these cargo haulers don't have to travel far with only one person. Thanks anyway.

No worries. Like I said, it was for a game project. The client defines its capabilities.

I'll go along with that. Thank you for the update. And you draw kewl spacecraft.

Sensible design - not a great beauty, but a workhorse on whose back empires are build on. Though not a good sign for said empire if these things need to get weaponized...

Function dictates form has been the rule for most of my works. The armament does mean things are pretty bad.

This is the perfect design for a workers broken cargo ship that I'd need... Hmmm, now I wonder if it can tow some survey satellites...

It likely could indeed.

I use a diffuse map, set frensel specularity, and a bump map for most textures in the render. The bump map is what gives it that scarred/pitted look while the specularity dictates how light shines/reflects off of it. The propellant tank and radiator portions also have reflectivity settings added so they will reflect their surroundings.

with the textures and lighting.
Really nice render.

How long is it? If it's longer than about 60 metres, docking those would be so laborious... Hopefully they have very good docking computers.

I don't recall exactly how big the Samson is, but it's not anywhere near longer than 60 meters. The cargo modules are 10x10x5 meters.

Got it. Still would be a pain to dock...

The cargo train would probably be kicked loose at the destination to storage. That would help.
